Super down for a rerun. I think we all have some old connections to plan something ahead of time, on an updated game, or even outdated, for all of us to do an event on. I would look forward to that very much

So you're all probably thinking, wtf is this thread and why was this sort of title placed in the "philosophy" section. Your answer is this... Sometimes in today's society, people are too self-absorbed that they only care about themselves, and rarely give affection to anyone else. Whether it be helping an elderly cross the street, or get something off of a high shelf in a store for the vertically challenged, people are just too damn busy. So before I enter this world of business in the "all for themselves" society, I plan to give something back to my community, as a going away present, to let future generations know that somebody took time out of their life and cared about them. In my school we have to do a Senior Project. Develop a Research paper and a project that shows exemplary learning of the research. I am producing a Non-Profit business Gaming Center in my small hamlet, completely funded by donations and grants. I will place my activity and progress in this thread, to show you guys before, and after. This is the space I was giving to produce my product. It is in a warehouse all the way in the back where there is an abandoned office. I have to remove everything from this office, to create an empty space to work with. Yeah, even after saying that this is my senior project it sounds like I don't have other people coming first, and this is for me also, but I could have chosen my topic on ANYTHING else. Falconry, Pokemon Trainer, Culinary arts, ANYTHING. I chose to do this for the specific reason of helping kids, and providing something to do in my small shitty town. Something I was never given as a kid. Here are a few pictures of what the space looks like. Typical office cubicles, low end dells(beefy computers), etc. This is a side room where I *think* I'll place the 10 V. 10 high end gaming computers This is the warehouse/organization that is providing me with the space Edited Sat Sep 27 2008, 05:51PM |

The only thing you have to realize Zero is that some people, like me, could give two-shits about anyone but himself, let alone a fuckin' community. Good luck with your senior project, but let me put it this way: What have those little bastards done for you? Probably absolutely nothing other than annoy the shit out of you. I'm just pointing that out that respect shouldn't be returned until it's gained. Then again, that's your senior project and you have to do it, but if your school's as cool as mine you can just write about what you want to do when you graduate. Self preservation and brutal honesty FTW! |

Knight, people don't have to do stuff for you in order for you to help them. In fact, the world would be a much better place if people weren't so bent on expecting something in return. How come people can't just be nice to be nice? |

Zero, I think this is a damned good idea and you're an admirable human being. |

But thanks for the compliment Bandy <3 Knight, they already told you my exact argument. The whole point is they haven't done SHIT for me. Whether they know that I'm doing this for them or not... if I get any credit at all... at least they were given something. If they are ungrateful I at least feel like I've done something and I've tried. I'm being nice just to be nice. By doing this I hope others see my kindness and do the same thing. To just be nice because you can. |

Wow that's very altruistic of you... However I would argue that a legitimate business venture would ultimately produce more good than a non-profit. 1) With a real business, you have the possibility of hiring employees, w/ jobs people then contribute to society via taxes. 2) You contribute directly to society a certain percentage of your earnings via taxes, this number will be far greater than any monetary influence you could ever hope to have on society with a non-profit. 3) With a business, you are forced to identify a need in the community & then to provide it (otherwise you'll be out of business). This is helpful. However in a non-profit you can make up almost any pansy ass reason for doing something, claim it in the name of the greater good and run some stupid ass program that benefits a remarkably small amount of people. (ie. a church or a video game center - I'd argue a Subway is infinitely more helpful to society than either those two options.) 4) Now you don't have to live in your van because you don't have any money. Making you A) look better & smell better, two important aspects to helping society. 5) A video game center is stupid & serves no purpose other than to further destroy the minds of our youth. Why don't you open a library, or sponser a little league team or fucking have a free health day at schools and hand out condoms & tooth brushes & teach kids about herpes & gingivitis... again infinitely more helpful than a video game center... So while being helpful is nice & all... I think being a selfish capitalist is actually MORE helpful to society than not. Just read The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith for more on this. |
