Super down for a rerun. I think we all have some old connections to plan something ahead of time, on an updated game, or even outdated, for all of us to do an event on. I would look forward to that very much

Hi. This is awkward, but I felt like I needed to start this topic. Racism has been a buzz around the community, for quite some time. In threads, and other places. But I ask you here. What makes something racist in today's comedy jokes? Racism now of today's is often the subject of jokes. This can be seen in various comedians across America such as, Chris Rock, Louis Black, and Dat Phan Are these people labeled racist, by society? No. Why? If they don't mean what they say, why do they expect their humor to be funny, if what their saying is true? Is it because society finds the stereotypical views true to some degree, in which case it would be labeling our society today, as a whole "racist". I am very much confused as to what to think. On one hand, it is racist to laugh at these jokes. On the other hand (and this is the one I'm leaning towards) we should laugh. Choosing not to laugh, or acknowledge something as being funny, simply because it is racist, is ignorant. We all are ignorant if we do not accept, in my opinion the fact that we are all different. Some of us are white, some black, some Asian, some British, some American, some Polish, some blond, some brunette. With these differences come tendencies. And if those tendencies, or patters of behavior, of the majority, are funny to bring up, and point out, than why not laugh, at our imperfect nature? Before I get some angry replys like "You talked about jews getting murdered as a joke" or stuff like that, I want to say it WAS wrong of me to bring that up, which btw was not racist, it was anti-semitic, something I should know about because I am polish, and my grandfather and his father fought in WWI and WWII. My people were put in concentration camps just like the Jewish community. Anyways...that was to clear up THAT topic. But what I was trying to say was that I am not talking about that, because that was not racist. When I was writing this thread up, I was thinking more along the lines of Nate's thread, which I found halarious, yet something inside stopped me from enjoying it fully, because of the fact it was slightly offensive. I was confused myself, on what I am trying to get across here. If I find the need to add anything I will. But I am interested in hearing everyone's opinions on this. Edited Wed Apr 04 2007, 02:02AM |

As you said to me, people can laugh at talking about babies being raped, and people being murdered... but they can't laugh at stereotypes, and generalities unless it's from a guy on stage. I think it's generally less accepted because recism is WAY more popular, and racism is a current issue... if baby rape was at an all time high, and it was recieving a lot of attention, people would be offended by people talking about it.

I'm not just talking about whether saying it on a lower scale is racist, but even on a stage. That has to be in some way the same thing. Because it's still breaks down to individuals taking this information. I'm tryign to generalize it more.

You asked why these people who make these jokes are not labeled racist and I gotta say that for the most part I think it is because they are whatever race they are talking about...for example Carlos Mencia always talks about Hispanics in a derogatory manner he isn't labeled racist because he is a part of that race...Dave Chappelle makes fun of black people but he can get away with it because he is black...I think that it is wrong that so many people think and feel that certain people can get away with telling certain jokes or saying certain things just because they are a certain race and maybe this is just me but it seems to be a huge double standard and it seems to convey ignorance but maybe thats just me Also to touch on your question on whether or not to laugh at these jokes or not I will just give my own personal view on this matter...Even though I know that racist jokes are wrong and people think it is terrible to laugh at them I personally laugh because it is hilarious to see how ignorant people can be, those people who actually believe whatever they are saying in those jokes Then to the question of whether they mean what they say or not...I think there are two sides to that I think that they do believe what they say to some extent because sadly a lot of the stereotypes that these jokes play off of are true and also I think they say these things because for some reason the public wants to hear these things, people are afraid to speak their minds about certain things and that is what a lot of comedians try to hit on in their acts. I don't know maybe what I just said is just me or maybe not. Can't wait to see other people's opinions. |

It's still funny when Dave Chappelle makes fun of white people though, isn't it?

South Park is a perfect example of comedy even with racism. It is acceptable humour, and I laugh at all the Jew jokes, and I am Jewish. Making stereotypes to laugh at, such as Jews are cheap or Jews have long noses are acceptable foundations for a joke, but when you take it into allusions to genocide such as the case of the holocaust during Hitler's rule, it loses the comedic voice as it is a much more serious topic. Making jokes about AIDs can be funny, but if you make an AIDs joke infront of someone with AIDs it loses the humour. It is the audience that the joke is said to. If people don't like the humour used in South Park, they do not have to watch the show. I watch it, and have a laugh... I don't think differently about anything or anyone. If you make jokes about Judiasm, I will not mind unless it is overwhelmingly offensive, where it crosses the joking boundary. Make fun of my nose, make fun of my cheapness, make fun of my circumcized penis, make fun of my grandmother for stuffing food down me.. But don't make fun of how relatives died during a war. When it comes to Black people -- you can joke on how they're poor, or how they are all in prison... But don't take the joke too far, and don't use slang terms, such as the N bomb. Use your brain when you tell jokes. Look at the audience, and use your discretion. If the audience is African American's make a white joke...etc... A baby-rape joke is acceptable to most people, except to those who have been raped as a baby, parents of the baby-raped child, or people that find things like talking about fecal matter or farts disgusting... |

Jesus, moving back to that aids thing you were talking about... millions of people in africa are dying from aids, yet it's funny when someone (Satan) says "go get aids and die"... Why? Why is racism more offensive than telling someone to stop existing?!
