Is a hypocrite and thinks that he's better than everyone else. Just read some of his works, he likes to contradict what he says in the beginning and glorifies himself. Discussssss |

Where in the world does it say, as a rule that any philosopher has to live by what he preaches? I mean, no one really does if you think about it. |

I have a half hour left of school then its finally summer break. I just took my American literature final and got a B, Yay! I hate this class and all american authors and poets lol. |

He was only trying to live a life that no one else would do as him - Would you call it an experiment ? Beliefs and morals.. How is he contradicting himself with something he has created ? He said once that a man was so amazed at his life style that he too wanted to do the same, but Henry felt as though he would be stuck in a point in life at which this man has not reached yet. He would be waiting until they were on the same level (this is in very few words.. Its still morning) and that they would not be able to go further respectably as one. Compromise would be the only option for every situation they came across. He only compared himself to others, observation, and pointing out what he thought to be flaws. There are more hateful writers than him. *Ill say more, just ask the right question...* | ||

Okay heres a little something on Clothing by Thoreau : 'A man who has at length found something to do will not need to get a new suit to do it in; for him the old will do, that has lain dusty in the garret for an inderterminate period. Old shoes will serve a hero longer than they have served his valet,-if a hero ever has a valet, -bare feet are older than shoes, and he can make them do. Only they who go to soirees and legislative halls must have new coats, coats to change as often as the man changes in them. But if my jacket and trousers, my hat and shoes, are fit to worship God in, they will do; will they not? Who ever saw his old clothes,-his old coat, actually worn out, resolved into its primitive elements, so that it was not a deed of charity to bestow it on some poor boy, by him perchance to be bestowed on some poorer still, or shall we say richer, who could do with less? I say, beware of all enterprises that require new clothes, and not rather a new wearer of clothes. If there is not a new man, how can the new clothes be made to fit? If you have any enterprise before you, try it in your old clothes. All men want, not something to do with, but something to do, or rather something to be. Perhaps we should never procure a new suit, however ragged or dirty the old, until we have so conducted, so enterprised or sailed in some way, that we feel like new men in the old, and that to retain it would be like keeping new win in old bottles. Our moulting season, like that of the fowls, must be a crisis in our lives. The look retires to solitary ponds to spend it. Thus also the snake casts its slough, and the caterpillar its wormy coat, by an internal industry and expansion; for clothes are but our utmost cuticle and mortal coil. Otherwise we shall be found sailing under false colors, and be inevitably cashiered at last by our own opinion, as well as that of mankind.' Its just a blurb of it all- |

Pg 130 on Visitors (Walden) (last paragraph) 'I heard that a distinguished wise man and reformer asked him if he did not want the world to be changed; but he answered with a chuckle of surprise in his Canadian accent, not knowing that the question had ever been entertained before, "No, I like it well enough." It would have suggested many things to a philosopher to have dealings with him. To a stranger he appeared to know nothing of these things in general; yet I sometimes saw in him a man whom I had not seen before, and I did not know whether he was as wise as Shakspeare or as simply ignorant as a child, whethere to suspect him of a fine poetic consciousness or of stupidity. A townsman told me that when he met him sauntering through the village in his small closefitting cap, and whistling to himself, he reminded him of a prince in disguise.' |

Okay Solitude- Just a bit: 'There is commonly sufficient space about us. Our horizon is never quite at our elbows. The thick wood is not just at our door, nor the pond, but somewhat is always clearing, familiar and worn by us, appropriated and fenced in some way, and reclaimed from Nature. For what reason I have this vast range and circuit, some squuare miles of unfrequented forest, for my privacy, abandoned to me by men? My nearest neighbor is a mile distant, and no house is visible from any place but the hill-tops within half a mile of my own. I have my horizon bounded by woods all to myself; a distant view of the railroad where it touches the pond on the one hand, and of the fence which skirts the woodland road on the other. But for the most part it is as solitary where I live as on the prairies. It is as much Asia or Africa as New England. I have, as it were, my own sun and moon and stars, and a little world all to myself. At night there was never a traveller passed my house, or knocked at my door, more than if I were the first or last man; unlesss it were in the spring, when at long intervals some came from the village to fish for pouts,-they plainly fished much mmore in the Walden Pond of their own natures, and baited their hooks with darkness,-but they soon retreated, usually with light baskets, and left "the wold to darkness and to me," and the black kernal of the night was never profaned by any human neighborhood. I believe that men are generally still a little afraid of the dark, though the witches are all hund, and Christianity and candles have been introduced" |
