Super down for a rerun. I think we all have some old connections to plan something ahead of time, on an updated game, or even outdated, for all of us to do an event on. I would look forward to that very much

wrote ... US Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns has signed a deal that will provide Israel with $30bn (£14.8bn) of military aid over the next 10 years. The Israeli prime minister, Ehud Olmert, has said the aid will preserve his country's military advantage over other countries in the Middle East. The new military aid package represents a 25% increase from present levels. The US announced multi-billion-dollar arms deals with Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and other Gulf states last month. Washington says it wants to help its allies in the Middle East meet their security needs and counter the growing power of Iran in the region. 'Investment in peace' Mr Burns and Israeli Foreign Ministry Director-General Aharon Abramovitz signed the memorandum of understanding on the new aid package at a ceremony in Jerusalem. Needless to say, given Israel's predicament, living in a region that is very violent and unstable, its military edge is of interest to our country, and we've committed to that Nicholas Burns US Undersecretary of State Arms deal analysis It will see Washington transfer $30bn over the next decade, compared to $24bn over the past 10 years. The first payment of $2.55bn will be made in October 2008. Mr Burns called the aid package an "investment in peace", saying "peace cannot be made without strength". "Needless to say, given Israel's predicament, living in a region that is very violent and unstable, its military edge is of interest to our country, and we've committed to that," he said. The money must be used to purchase military equipment from the US defence industry, although Israel will also be permitted to use 26.3% to buy equipment from local companies. The arrangement requires Congressional approval, but Mr Burns said he thought there would be little opposition, the Associated Press news agency reported. 'Iranian challenge' After arriving in Jerusalem on Wednesday evening, Mr Burns met Mr Olmert briefly. US ARMS AID TO ISRAEL $30bn over 10 years 1st payment of $2.55bn in 2008 Annual payments rising to $3.1bn by 2011 26.3% can be spent in Israel Rest must be spent on US arms Mr Olmert asked the US envoy to thank President George W Bush and the secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice, for their efforts in bringing about the accord. "The aid agreement with the US is an important and significant component for Israel, and proves once again the depth of the relationship between the two countries and the United States' commitment to Israel's security, and to preserving its qualitative advantage over other countries in the Middle East," Mr Olmert said. While he is in Israel, Mr Burns is also meeting Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, Defence Minister Ehud Barak and other Israeli officials for "discussions on regional security, including the challenge posed by Iran". The Bush administration said last month that it was offering weapons aid to other countries in the region, including $20bn for Saudi Arabia, $13bn for Egypt and $20bn to be shared between Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and the United Arab Emirates. This is great, we can give money to a country across the world, but we cant keep up our infrastructure here at home. I love it. How many bridges can be fixed with 30 billion? I bet you can also re-build one of your biggest and most famous cities with that much money in case a crazy natural disaster like a FUCKING HURRICANE hits. I am so ashamed of our government. Btw, I am not anti-israel. NO foreign country should come before the American people! The last part is the kicker " The Bush administration said last month that it was offering weapons aid to other countries in the region, including $20bn for Saudi Arabia, $13bn for Egypt and $20bn to be shared between Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and the United Arab Emirates." Way to give money to the Saudis, who just happen to make up most of the insurgents fighting in Iraq. This is no investment in peace, its an investment in war. Edited Fri Aug 17 2007, 01:11AM |

why give money to an already rich nation such as saudi arabia? they got the most oil in the damn middle east. hell, the king's butler's butlers have butlers, man! and as for the UAE, they aint doing too bad either. They just built one of the biggest malls in the world, and an indoor ski resort right next door. and who the hell would want to fight in the UAE anyway? Its 120 degrees average temperature in the summer there. If nobodys gonna fight them, why give them money? once bush is out there will be changes. |

this is a typical government "bribe" if you will, except it isn't really bribing for anything illegal. What the money is really for is so we can hold multiple USA military bases in the country we are giving money to. This gives up multiple things. 1. Quick and cheaper access to oil 2. Military readiness on the other side of the country. 3. the ability to move/trade soilders between bases and home. (more bases, easier it is for them to make their way back home.) 4. This is israel. A country that was given to the Jewish people for sanctuary for all their hardships. America is not just losing money in this deal, we are surly getting something in return, whether it be weapon trade, strategy trade, or the ability for us to spy on Iran, or Iraq, or even Afghanistan for that matter. If you only look at the numbers, you're gonna get upset/confused. But there are a lot of things in the background to what you are just hearing. And especially in a time on conflict in the middle east, with the USA. |

America isn't in as much debt as you might think (sure one of you will site the exact number in the trillions in us debt) the us just spends too much money on frivolous programs. If we wanted to we could get out of debt in a couple months. Not just by cutting funding to worthless programs but also by calling in the "bar tab" that much of the globe owns to the United States. American lives should be the first priority of the government, and thats what the us is doing in this instance. in addition to the points rusty made, by giving all this funding to the people of Arabia, we are showing the Iranians that the Arabs aren't going to be an easy push over that they can blitzkrieg through over night. These arms deals are an investment in our future. Plus showing solidarity and good relations between the us and the middle east is a good thing !. It helps keep some of the governments that aren't hostile to us in power, Sure the Saudis might be contributing to terrorism, yet it would be much worse if the monarchy was over thrown and wahhabists were allowed to gain control , that happens there is nothing to stop the new regime from cutting off oil to us or igniting the entire region in a conflagration of massive death and destruction. Also we havn't just been giving free aid to places like Saudi Arabia, after the gulf war the pentagon submitted a request to congress for the M1A1 tank to be replaced by the M1A2 (which has a thermal viewer and depleted uranium armor) congress in all its wisdom said no, the Saudis offered to buy the new tank from the DOD and with the funds DOD made form the sale we were able to create our own force of M1A2s. This is just one example of how having good relations with countries in the middle east serves to benefit us. 2. A Showing of solidarity between the us and Israel, tells terrorists that they better not do anything stupid like use a WMD on Israel , because we will help them kick your ass. Aid to Israel serves as an effective deterrent toward an escalation in global terror. Also one last thing, giving money to the Israelis is great because , we all know this translates to more of one great Israeli made handgun THE DESERT EAGLE! Edited Fri Aug 17 2007, 03:25PM |
