Allow me to echo what was said earlier..."greatest comeback in NFL conference championship history!" I'm glad the Pats lost. But, I do love Tom Brady. He's soooooo dreamy! I would love to grab on to his milky white thighs and enter him. The only thing that would make that any better would be having Tony Romo in my mouth at the same time. Even so, the Pats blew a 21-3 lead. How's that for a comeback win? You have to give Manning some credit right there. He may have sucked ass in previous play off games but he showed himself worthy in this game. I do not like Peyton Manning, but he played like someone that had some experience whether then like a rookie in his previous appearences. The Giants may have lost in the playoffs, but it made me happy that his brother was watching the game watching his big brother kick some cocky pansee's asses. Now it's all up to Peyton to avenge his brother's loss (His brother is horrible I might add and nothing like Peyton.) This is going to be one hell of a Super bowl to watch, don't care what you angry Pats fans think just because your team didn't make it this year. Hell, my team went 8-8, coach retired, offensive coordinator left, and I'm not complaining. I have faith in us next year. We won the Super bowl last year being the under dogs and when we won we didn't act like a bunch of cocky pricks (Hence, Patriots.) Like I said previously, their reign of Super Bowls are over. Thank God. | ||

idk if you remeber emerican...think back wayyy to when the patriots first one the superbowl in the 2000s...i bet you dont remeber the patriots vs raiders..i bet you don't remeber the bad call that let the patriots win that game and screwed the raiders out of the game huh? look it up, the patriots THRIVE on bad calls throughout their history. It's like I said earlier, that kind of shit is some of the reasons why the Pats have got their way up on the ladder to win Super bowls. What do you mean about press conferences on Bill Cowher and Sean Peyton? You mean that they're respectable coaches? Because I know that Cowher is one, which is why he was the best coach in the past 15 years. | ||

see thats it. everyone outside of new england hates the pats. which is why the league doesnt want to see them in the super bowl. im not pissed that they didnt make it. i actually picked the colts to win. its the way the colts won. all of the momentum changing plays. yeah, so they made some bad calls in the past. but those shouldnt matter. make the right calls, and dont play favorites |

Dude, all referrees make bad calls. Look in the Super Bowl last year where Ben Rothleisberger didn't even get in the end zone and they gave him it. He even admitted after i that he was not in. If you are talking about the pass interference calls during the games, they should of had more i think and a couple should of been taken away. That reffing crew only called 4 DPI all year long. You know their is more than that. I know the exact call u are talking about Mafia. That was the shittiest call i have ever seen. It was such a clear call adn they sucked at calling it. Everyone was sick of the Pats winning by poor officiating crews. I guess the Patriots excuse this year was the fact they didn't have Walt Whitman officiating. Otherwise, they'd have won another Superbowl. And you're wrong about people who "deserve" to win. 2 years ago, Pittsburgh went 15-1 and broke the AFC record for most wins in a season, and who did we lose to? The little fucking pricks in New England! They don't deserve shit! If the Super Bowl went by what teams were liked the most throughout the States, then the Steelers and Cowboys would go to the Superbowl every year, since they are both the 1st and second most followed teams in the NFL. Remember the San Diego game last year? Even the fact that they were good, there were still more Steeler fans in Charger's stadim then there was Charger fans. So this would nullify your generalization about how you think that the league doesn't want to see them in the Superbowl because everyone hates them. | ||

Aside from specific calls, I like the initial commentary Emerican offered in his initial post and the "Are Refs Playing Favorites?" thought experiment is quite interesting... emerican wrote ... You see it in the NBA. You see it in college football. Now its made its way into the NFL. The referees are making bull shit calls ...The refs are taking favorites and calling stuff for them... But of course, the refs didn't call it because they wanted to see pussy manning in the super bowl... This "favorites" is being seen around sports. Games are being stolen from teams so that the higher paid, higher profiled teams can make more money,,, Whenever a player gets traded by a team and they are unhappy about it, they will echo the "Sports is a business and I understand the team's decision" assertion. Well sure, I tend to agree that pro-sports have a 'preferred' outcome to games and that the business of sport is overshadowing the purity of competition. The commodification of sport is evident by the billions of dollars generated from TV, Commercials, Products, Endorsements, Merchandise, etc... This expansion of 'ways to generate means' pretty much solidified the notion that if an outcome could better serve the interests of those who had invested finances, then the League and those companies who pay to have their logos or commercials aired during games will be more proffitable. Now Emerican places this blame on the Refs, but I tend to believe that the Refs are just agents of the League, doing what higher powers tell them to. Notice that after a game, players and coaches are placed in front of a mic and asked a shitload of questions? Notice that a Referee has never been acountable for their actions after a game? The league hides their Refs because in many instances, they connot justify the calls they made without saying "The League told us to favor that team, so that's how we called it". emerican wrote ... The 'David vs Goliath' scenarios are nice during the regular season, but at Superbowl time if a team is getting blown out by halftime, then there is no gaurantee that the casual viewing audience will have any interest in watching the second half,,, thus they won't see the commercials aired,,, beer companies will be pissed,,, etc. Lets face it, not everyone is a hardcore fan. Not everyone cares about Chicago or Indy. But during Superbowl time, watching the game seems to be teh 'thing to do'. We all know that Superbowl commercials are the most expensive timeslot per second every year in North America. A lot of the Pricepoint that the League/TV network charges is directly related to last years viewership and TV ratings coupled with projections, inflation, amount of open spots. Hence, having a close game will have more attentive viewers thus driving up ratings as well as next years commercial timeslot prices. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Superbowl,,, its practically its own holiday and its a gaurantee that there will be a lot of viewers much the same as the holiday games. (Holiday Games: Lots of family sitting around after dinner and instead of bickering about what to watch, Football is put on because the guys control the remote,,, as a result, many women and casual watchers are drawn to the game. Same applies with Superbowl. Casual watchers now tune in to see the commercials/half time performances. The trick is to keep them watching the whole game. You can provide this by bringing a good matchup to the table. No different than 2 heavyweights fighting for the belt. More viewers the whole game means higher overall ratings which translates into more profits.) Along with big business, Armed Forces have a large invested interest in the game of football. Its no secret that football and armed combat are similar in many metaphorical ways. Having a culture that loves the 'football' style of combat translates into more army recruits. Take note and COUNT the number of Army TV ads you will watch during the game and laugh knowing those are YOUR tax dollars,,, not Budweiser or Coke's or the private sector's allocated marketing funds. I'd love to see an independant survey that asks Army recruits "Did you play High School Football?" or "Do you like football" just to better illustrate the co-relation between the two. The NBA has the 'Lottery system' whereby shitty teams are given 'more balls in the drum' when it comes to getting the first overall pick. Notice in 2003 the Cleveland Cavs got #1 and LeBron. Notice that LeBron grew up 40 miles outside of Cleveland. The worst part is, the commissioner David Stern just holds up envelopes with the team logo inside,,,, nobody ever sees the drum spinning and nobody actually sees the numbers drawn. Prime PRIME example would be the Toronto Raptors in the NBA. Expansion team in 96, never got a first overall pick yet year after year they were near the bottom of the barrel in league standings. Finalyy they got the #1 pick this past draft,,, why? All of a sudden the NBA decides to 'go global' after seeing the popularity of Yao Ming in Asia. (All-Star balloting for Ming was huge his first year in the league, and he started for the Western Conference above players like Shaq and Tim Duncan... because of Asian support) Anyways, this past summer David Stern was all across Europe and Asia trying to sell the game. He said that "There are a lot of people kicking the ball, we just want them to pick it up and start dribbling it" Likewise, this past season, they introduced the new Spalding ball with a composite material (instead of genuine leather like the old one) which makes it easier for people with smaller hands to 'palm' and dribble.(Asians and many Europeans are generally smaller in stature than North Americans) Again, a move that goes hand in hand with their globalization efforts. How does this relate to the Raptors getting the #1 overall pick you ask? Well Toronto is the most "European" city in the NBA and by far one of the most culturally diverse (per capita) in North America. This multiculturalism is a stepping stone in the NBA's globalization efforts in that it is the easiest market to infiltrate given our 2 country's approximation to each other. It helps that the Raptors RECENTLY SIGNED 2 players from Slovenia, 2 from Spain, 1 Israeli league 5 time MVP and with the 1st overall pick, they got Bargnani from Italy. (This year a new Soccer League is starting up, and Toronto has a team. Some of you heard that Beckham signed with the LA Galaxie for $250 million. There is pressure to get as many fans watching your sport as possible because if not, a new product will take them. Soccer is huge in Europe so the NBA decided to get the jump on the Euro Toronto market along with the Raptors organization by bringing in these international players.) The Raptors finally fit into the NBA's plan because the face of the game changed. Likewise, 24 out of 82 games will be Nationally televised in Canada. Fuckin huge,, except you need to order a channel, RaptorsTV for $2.50 a month to see those 24 games. Steve Nash, a Canadian, won the MVP 2 years running because his style of play (pass first, open the floor) is more in tune with the international game and that helps further the NBA's plan. Likewise, the NBA announced that they are in talks to have 2 regular season games per team played overseas. Opening night, Comissioner David Stern was in Toronto... Wow, not NY where League office is, not in Miami to celebrate last year's champs,,, he was in Toronto to get the globalization of the sport started on the right foot. And with 9 new players this year out of 12 on the roster, the Raptors are tops in teh Atlantic division and almost at .500. The point to all of this,,, the entry draft was rigged and the Raptors benefitted with the greater good being globalization of the NBA and basketball in order to get some of Soccer's market share on a global scale. Cycles. Sports revolve in cycles. By that I mean teams that are shitty do not remain shitty for too long. If a team is shit and can't compete then they will lose viewership, and seats will be empty. A bandaid solution to this was to have a Superstar per team that the fans came out to watch even though the team wasn't winning. (NBA and NHL are prime examples) Take note of Vice Carter on the Raptors. Vince was the top vote getter in the All Star balloting for a few years after winning the slam dunk competition. Raptor games were seldom televised in the States yet his Jersey was warn in music Videos by Jay-Z, Ja Rule and many others. Even when the team is shit, a superstar can boost merchandise sales and shit teams have a better chance at getting a prefered superstar player by way of a rigged draft. Carter's popularity was at its highest when he did the Nike Shox ads, jumping over Gary Peyton with the large Afro and Warren Sapp. Teams can't stay shitty for too long because whats the point of having 10 great teams and 20 shit teams? In order to maximize profits as a whole, its better to utilize marketing in all segments. The NHL learned this the hard way. Err, thats quite a bit. Anyways, my point was that Pro-Sports are a business and the League and those compaies with invested interest have a preferered outcome to games/series and who gets to play in them. The Refs are 'in on it' to a certain extent. The Draft Lotteries are definitly rigged. Wrastlin' like the WWF of old was fake but we (as youngsters) didn't want to believe it. It reached unparalleled heights of popularity after they called it 'sports-entertainment'. I used to think that sports were pure but something happened in the early 90's, it was commodified. Now I look at all pro sports as being 'business-entertainment'. True sport is saved for the Olympics and Tee-Ball. I'm so fucking Emo right now.  Predictions: Who do you think will win, Colts or Bears? My Prediction: I already know who won! The Sponsors, Beer companies, Merchandise manufacterers, Chinese sweatshop owners whose slaves make Colts/Bears jerseys, Marketers, Vegas bookies, Army recruiters, etc.... Your hopes will go to a team, your dollar will go to a beer company. My money has more value than my 'care' with regards to the Cunnilingus Colts or the Buttfuck Bears, but I'll still watch the game so that I may find some solice in knowing that my grievances were rooted in more than mere angst.
