I was thinking more about this today, if you want to go ahead with your idea then I think adding some sort of incentive is crucial. Members need to feel they are being rewarded for their efforts. How about creating some sort of "Member of the month" feature for those people who take initiative and assemble these task forces. The OP would decide who put the most effort in that month (which wouldn't be difficult, whenever an idea is brought to you to approve, you should know who originally suggested it, and if you keep seeing the same name, etc.). Then adding his username in an in-game advert for a month would be nice. something like "Thank you to **** our member of the month". Or, I'd be willing to buy the member any game of their choosing for $10 or under on steam. (I'm an undergraduate, I need to feed myself, so I can't give more) Something like that. I think if you wanna have members volunteer for these things incentives are crucial. Edited Wed Aug 29 2012, 02:15AM |

Don't beat a dead horse. We are here, I am putting work into it with mi amigos, and if there is a task that I feel comfortable delegating to someone else, it will get delegated. You're here now, posting the above garbage in an otherwise constructive discussion. gLiTch wrote ... We are not fucking up. Setting the record straight. Same thing here--you're not adding anything useful to the conversation. I already did. But expect some defensive action when we are being subliminally attacked for about 7 days now amongst several threads. Is the point of this thread "not a bad idea" as you put it, or is it an attack on you and b4ndito? I don't think it can be both which means either you've changed your mind about this thread or b4ndito has incorrectly characterized this thread as an attack. Either way, thanks for helping to derail it. I thought I suggested a good idea and now you and b4ndito want to tear it down. Good work, LA team! Sarcasm and fueling the fire doesn't help either. Onto the topic at hand. Someone please answer my posts, as the first post is vague. Was I thinking the same thing or something else? I also like bleeks incentive idea, but I don't think it should be monetary. |

Recognition is good. Adverts on the server or buying something for people isn't necessary or even necessarily good. It won't motivate people. | ||

You would use that ideology for small children, and hopefully grown adults wouldn't need to be motivated with gifts to do something they should volunteer to do, seeing as someone else is paying for the server, writing their plugins, and implementing them for free. It is a community effort, therefore I do not see the point of rewarding them for the least they could do. Rusty wrote ... Was I wrong in my assumption that basically it would be a discussion, then the LA would bring it to the OPs? I thought this would all take place ont he forums, as we have an openness about us, that everyone should be able to see how one of our servers might be changing! Some people here don't like things done in secret But the way I saw this working really was someone who cared about the server (obviously some dick who played once and requests noclip Tuesdays shouldn't have a say) brings up an ISSUE AND a SOLUTION, then discussion happens between LA's and members, who could be hand selected (maybe make a forum for it where everyone can see, but only few can post). After discussion and an agreement happens, the LA's could discuss with OPs, and either have the plan accepted or shot down. That was my take on it. It'll be hard to keep the OPs from posting in the thread though! It's kind of like the LA's that we're looking for here, only perhaps a few more. This will (I'm biting my tongue here) take some responsibility off of the LA's plate. The problem with Bleek's idea is I don't want just any Joe Sch'mo providing input on something that they know absolutely nothing about. I would rather assume this responsibility to someone who has a bit of a background in it, something that the current LA's or OPs would see they can handle. Having a hard time getting money in? Where's that FT'er that's an accountant? Assign a task force! Have a plethora of members demanding donations! (Just kidding, it just doesn't work that way.) Anyways, I hope by now you know where I'm going with this. Task forces are cool and it will make them feel like they're a part of special forces. That alone should be cool enough. |

I'm sorry, but I have to be a little mean here: you guys said the incentive idea is bad because these members SHOULD already do this as we arr paying the server costs. So are thousands of other people who run servers, and if we start to go around expecting players to do something as if they OWE us then we will continue to have 0/20 players on average. Incentives aren't just for children. That's how the world works. I assume none of you work for free if you have jobs? Im not saying to put these people on a payroll but have a nice little chance at a small gift. Knightrider's post made me slightly uneasy. You sounded a little bitter and harsh towards players expecting them to help you. I think we mustn't forget that we aren't running the only server in the game. I like the idea of people suggesting things on the server, EVEN new players. The OPs have to approve things anyway, so what's your problem with people trying to be constrictive or participating? |

So you're saying that these people should be paid as an incentive for being a part of a task force or being the member of the month? You're essentially comparing this to a job and neither Alex or myself sure as hell are not getting paid to do any of this. If you would like to fund the donation to pay for gifts every month to some kiss-ass, knock yourself out, I'm not stopping you. It's your money. All I'm saying is I shell out almost 40 bucks a month already to pay for the server (plus donations, thanks to all that have donated something to me), and I'm surely not going to give any more of my money to someone else because they polished my knob a little better than someone else. Look man, I see where you are going with this but these incentives are stuff that I use with my kid. Hey, brush your teeth when I tell you to and I'll give you a nickle each time you listen on first command. Hey, go to bed when I tell you to and I'll give you a nickle. You think I want to treat an adult with admin the same way? Hey, slay this guy in order of the escalation procedure, and you'll get ten bucks at the end of the month for being a model admin! What's up dude, oh, you guys came up with a policy for that problem? Bravo! Now which one of you do I award ten bucks? There are underlying issues with this and jealousy that will result from it. Yes, I'm being a little bold about it, but that's because I believe in a no-nonsense approach. Take offense to it if you will, all I'm saying is it's not my fault that someone is overly offended. |

I already said I would fund the gifts (if we chose to go down that road, instead of something else like member of the month, or something else entirely). I also already said that incentives aren't just for kids. You have some job right? If you get a bonus or raise at work do you feel like a child, or are do you feel like the extra work you're putting in is appreciated? The reason I feel incentives are necessary is because these task forces are putting in extra work that they do not owe us. Like I said, there's plenty of other servers they can play on, if they chose to play here and be productive members of the community they can get rewarded. About the kiss ass problem: Is what you're suggesting different? You don't think people who do this for free would be doing so purely out of the goodness of their heart? People always expect something, and like you said whether it is to feel special or have respect of the OPs/LAs they are always motivations behind people's actions. I am simply suggesting a motivation that is more physical to get more people interested in helping you guys out. I type a lot, but this is the most important thing you should understand about my motivations: I want more people to play on these servers so I can enjoy them again. That won't happen in we keep adding these responsibilities or rules for people who want to help out. I like the idea of just letting people keep posting on the forums and doing these things with no special name given to it. That to me sounds the most appealing to me. Keep is as simple as possible for people to contribute. If we go with Alex's idea and have them go through the procedure of forming a task force to help out the server, I say we reward some of those people for their initiative. Whether with a Steam Gift or the Member of the Month thing. Edited Wed Aug 29 2012, 03:51PM |

My initial post mentions admins and possibly 925 members as potential volunteers. Here is what I said: This is contrary to having "lead admins" who have a vague set of responsibilities. Instead, we ask for volunteers to help solve a very specific problem. Admins are suitable volunteers and members of the server-specific clan are suitable volunteers. I'm not going around expecting players to do things for us, and you've completely misrepresented what I was trying accomplish. I'm asking if all of our admins and possibly 925 members could be counted on to do more. I don't know how else to say it--you're arguing with an idea and a problem that I haven't suggested. bleek wrote ... Incentives aren't just for children. That's how the world works. I don't recall saying that players aren't allowed to make suggestions. Let me try this again: Operators are, in most cases, the only people who can implement changes. There is a lot more than just implementing a change, though. Changes should be discussed ahead of time to make sure the community doesn't collectively lose its shit when the change goes live. I understand all of this because this is how I've tried to handle things in the past. My original post was trying to find a better way of handling the discussion and decision-making that is involved before a change is made. It wouldn't exclude non-admin from participating in the discussion and it would make the admin/op decision-making process less exclusive. What is wrong with that? |

I think I see where we might of had a misunderstanding. I thought this process you talk about was already non-exclusive. I based this on the few GO server threads that were up by regular members a few weeks ago. That's why I thought what you were originally suggesting was more restrictive than what was already implemented. I can stand behind that. I don't understand why things haven't already been running like that. Back in 2006-07 things definitely were not restricted to admin decisions. Why has this become the norm? Restricting a community will always decrease the number of participants. Anyway, I think we're on the same page now. edit: shit, double post, sorry. Edit #2: KNIGHTRIDER READ THIS, I SPECIFICALLY WANT YOUR INPUT HERE KJSDFKJSDKFJSKDLHGJKSDVH: How would you feel about the user of the month if we didn't give a steam gift? Just some recognition for helping out in the form of an in game advert or news post. I want us to find some common ground. Edited Wed Aug 29 2012, 04:14PM |
