Super down for a rerun. I think we all have some old connections to plan something ahead of time, on an updated game, or even outdated, for all of us to do an event on. I would look forward to that very much

I've finally decided on the components, and being that I value a small number of your opinions, hopefully I will hear from the select few that have something productive to say. Nah, just playing with you. But if you aren't going to add anything constructive, then at least make it amusing. This is where I stand: CPU - Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition ($245) GPU – EVGA 01G-P3-1182-AR GeForce GTX 285 FTW Edition 1GB 512-bit DDR3 SLI Supported ($375) Case – Cooler Master RC-690-KKN1-GP Black SECC ABS ATX Mid Tower Computer Case ($80) Motherboard - ASUS M4A78-E AM2+/AM3 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard ($145) RAM - G.Skill 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) ($55) PSU - Corsair 650W or 750W (Should 650W be sufficient?) Unfortunately this is all my budget allows me. If you're unsure of what something is, just copy/paste into the Newegg search bar: -[link]- Edited Sat May 16 2009, 04:11AM |

if you're on a budget, go with intel i dont have any experience with amd, but i just bought a budget pc with an intel e8400 (stock 3ghz dual core, i have it overclocked at 4ghz with aftermarket cooler, runs cool and FAST). you could easily shave about $100 off the price tag just by getting an intel cpu and a motherboard that would work with it. i wouldn't reccommend quad core, especially if you plan on gaming alot. the quad cores are for those who do alot of encoding, decoding, stuff that would need 4 cores to do the work quickly. theyre not really for gaming at all. from personal experience, i can say the e8400 will absolutely rock your socks off if you want to game. even extracting RAR's from torrents is quick. if youre dead set on quad core, heres one: -[link]- and if not, heres the e8400: -[link]- and heres one of the best mobo's out there for intels -[link]- as well as a kickass cooler -[link]- and you should probably go with 700w with that card just to be safe heres a good one -[link]- take my advice, but whether or not you change your parts is up to you. i don't know half as much as other people, but i know what ive dealt with, and can say the parts i listed are reliable and relatively inexpensive if you're on a budget (like i was) |

emerican if I went intel it would have to be the i7, which besides the 920, is really expensive. But one day I would love to get one. Zero wrote ... Supposedly when overclocked it matches the intel i7. |

the 920, even though it's the "slowest" i7 is nothing to scoff at. It blows away the best quad core extreme, and can be overclocked to 4.0GHz. Definitely go with an i7 920 if you're willing to spend $390 between a cpu and mobo. It will blow the AMD away. Also, why would you want to overclock a cpu, just to catch up to an i7 stock? And @Emer: Just so you know the i7 is a quad-core. But the way it works, it can actually overclock any single core on demand. That means if a game is running on one core, and the other ones are idle or light load, they can actually extend their resources (up to a 22% boost in performance) to the loaded core. But hey, this is just my job to know this stuff (it really is, I sell computers), you don't have to follow my opinion. |

But hey, this is just my job to know this stuff (it really is, I sell computers), you don't have to follow my opinion. Couldnt have said it better myself. The build isnt bad at all. First and most important thing i will say is, when it comes to GPU's DO NOT buy the factory overclocked ones. FTW, SC, and SSC versions are not cool. Not only are their success rates lower then what they should be, but why spend and extra $30+ on something you can do yourself in 2 minutes? EVGA makes a program called Precision. It comes with all their cards and its for free on their website. Its so easy i can do it blindfolded. Adjust a stock card to the FTW speeds and voila! SAVINGS! Use those speeds as guidelines. 95% of the time you can get the card past those speeds very stable. EDIT: The program wont allow you to run it unstable, just in case your worried you will kill the card. Plus they give lifetime warranty which includes overclocking. If you want budget, go with emer's idea. Dual Cores are PERFECT for current games... however, in the near future, especially with coming DirectX 11 and Windows 7, Quads will outperform because games will be coded with more then 2 threads. Games are already starting to code with 3... its just a matter of time. If you dont want Core i7 that's fine... the AMD choice is very nice. I have nothing against them... I would just not spend that much $$ on them. Go with the Phenom I x4... Cheaper and gets the job done. If not, find a Q6600 or just go with a Q9400 and ZOOM ZOOM. If you go intel, go with an EVGA 750i FTW motherboard and some Kingston RAM. Im with the g/f so i cant go into much detail. Good Luck. Edited Sun May 17 2009, 07:54PM |

What are the best motherboards available if I choose to go with the i7 920? Silly question but would the 2GB version of the GTX 285 make a huge difference? I didn't even know there was a 2GB version available until today. It's significantly more expensive than the 1GB. Appreciate your help guys. Edited Mon May 18 2009, 02:25PM |

The 1gb is fine. If you are running something at a resolution greater then 1920x1200 then the 2gb will come in handy.... but not by much unless your running like triple monitors. If you want a mobo for the i7 then go with either EVGA - -[link]- Simply because they have the best RMA process, BEST tech support and will work with you for HOURs, and LIFETIME WARRANTY with overclocking included. Just be sure to flash the bios as soon as you get it... but hell, that's with all boards. OR Gigabyte - -[link]- I strongly suggest EVGA. Oh and for RAM, faster speeds doesnt mean faster RAM. Find DDR3 1333 RAM with the lowest possible timings. It will net you more speed then DDR3 1600+ RAM with higher timings. |

Yeah, the EVGA Glitch posted is a slick board for what you've got. Personally I would go with the classified series lol, but I dont think your looking for a $500 board. Also 12GB of ram is still a ridiculous amount right now, so the E785 is more or less future-proof. Be sure to get yourself a nice cpu fan too to keep your investment from frying. I recommend -[link]- with -[link]- to fit it to your cpu. That's what I would get. Lastly, I'm not sure of where you work right now, but if it's anyplace techie like Best Buy or some other electronics store, you should check out -[link]- It's a website where you read up on intel products, pass a couple of easy tests, then get to buy their stuff maaaad cheap. For example, right now they have a Smackover Mobo, i7 920, Windows Vista Ultimate, and an upgrade voucher for Windows 7 when it comes out for... get this... $289!!! If you qualify to sign up for the website, let me know first, cause I get extra credits for referring people to the site. Edited Mon May 18 2009, 11:09PM |
