Well, I finally decided it's time to pull the trigger. Not in any small part due to my lappy conveniently deciding to self destruct just outside of warranty. I'd go for a OCZ Vertex 2 instead of that Intel SSD any day, I have a Vertex 2 in my PC and it kicks ass. | ||

9.5 on a 10 scale Very nice picks,,, and several of them i have been keeping my eye on for quite some time as i will prolly be getting them. I just pulled the trigger on a WD Caviar Blue 1TB 7200RPM that i got for $58. Black is king though. The power supply is in my shopping cart as i speak lol... Just waiting until i get back from florida. Leaving to go down next week. Now the GTX 480 is great... and im sure your gonna SLI down the road. However, if you dont plan on SLI down the road because of the price then check out the GTX 460 HAWK from MSI. Ive been doing some reading about them. WIth MSI after burner people are getting them to 920mhz core clock easy and running at less then 70C under full load. Benchmarks show just one card at that clock comes up only a little bit below a GTX 480. It is cheaper, uses less power, runs cooler, and rapes pretty much any game at those clock settings. Some people even get them to 1000mhz core clock. Now running both in SLI at that same clock of 920mhz outperforms a GTX 480 and comes semi close to a 480 SLI build. Reason is because the 460's scale much better in SLI then the 480's. Now i only buy EVGA, although i trust MSI motherboards as i have had several and they run strong. MSI's warranty is 3 years on their GFX cards and i feel that is plenty of time. Overclocking is also covered and they have great customer service and RMA procedures. The difference between the EVGA 460 and the MSI HAWK is the fact that MSI completely redesigned the PCB from the ground up using much better parts, HSF's, heat pipes, etc. With an estimated life of 10 years. All for the same price as EVGA. Just some food for thought. Those two running SLI will generate much less heat, take up half the room as the cards i believe are like only 9 inches long, use less power (two 480's will not run on that power supply efficiently), and they will max every game out now and coming out for several years. One card on stock clocks runs Metro 2033 at 1920x1080 res on max settings with 4x AA and 8xAF... which is plenty. The HAWK demolishes that, and two of them will future proof your shit for a long while. Problem nowadays is that games are far behind the hardware... and console ports arent helping the fact either. Crysis was the only exception. Do a lil reading and see what you like. I don't know what your looking to do. A Single powerful card is great though because not every game is optimized for SLI. [/quote1287287933] Yeah, the case is completely modular, I get it. Honestly though, you don't need side quarter panels that come off, or fans that can be moved to cool the FDD. The reason most manufacturers don't have fans anywhere but the front-bottom is because that is where cooling is going to make the biggest difference. One thing that is good to look for in a case is a bottom mounted psu, so it can breathe fresh cool air instead of the warm case air. As for my build cost, the total will be around 2100-2400, not counting some parts that I've already purchased. And @ Glitch: Yeah, I was considering doing a sli rig with the 460s, but to be honest with you, a single card rig is going to perform better for my purposes. It's true that 2 460s will wreck a 480 in benchmark testing, but those benchmarks are really only there for "my computer is better than yours by 2 points!" and do not necessarily transfer over to real world performance. In fact one thing to watch out for, is a lot of manufacturers realize this misconception, and build their products to perform better on the benchmarks, and keep real world performance as a second priority. In a lot of games, a single card rig will do just as good, if not better than sli rig (Your game ends up doing more calculations on how to split the rendering instead of just doing the render work). Now, later on in the life of the computer, going sli might be a good idea. New games will have programming to take advantage of multi card PCs and multi-threaded cores. Right now though, it's just one more potential headache that's not worth it. Having said that, what do you think of zotac for a brand? I noticed they are the only ones putting zalman heatsinks on their cards (something I could do myself, but not as cheaply, and on top of that, they come overclocked) Edited Sun Oct 17 2010, 05:32AM |

I agree with you on the one card thing. I always did prefer one massive single powerhouse as they usually have less headaches and makes problems easier to diagnose. More shit = more potential problems. It is just the look of two cards in your tower that get me happy in my pants. Zotac is left field for me. I never looked into it. I can honestly say that i have never heard anything good about them.... but then again, ive never heard anything bad either. I always bought EVGA or XFX cards because they are trustworthy manufacturers and ive had nothing but great personal experiences with their products and customer service. EVGA RMA services are flawless. One email and i got my GTX 260 replaced after i fried it. Just read reviews on newegg regarding the Zotac cards. That usually answers most questions. I spend hours reading and comparing reviews. Hell, newegg reviews plus wikipedia is how i tought myself to build computers. On a side note... in your opinion, when SLIing two cards such as the GTX 460's... would their be a noticeable difference in performance when comparing them mounted to an LGA 1366 and 1156? Im about to just take the plunge next month and just build from the ground up. But this choice is a difference of about $300. I know because of the design of the Core i5 processors, that you cannot get 2 full x16 2.0 lanes on a motherboard (that i know of). SO, filling them out at x8 each, do you think there would be a noticeable difference when compared to full out x16 on an i7 rig? Im pretty sure that if i was going SLI or even tri SLI with 480's i would definitely notice a difference... but im not sure about regular old SLI with 460's. Edited Sun Oct 17 2010, 07:05AM |

can you really argue with the ability of a possible 15 fans cooling your shit? idk, say what you will but up to a point, that case is just bad fucking ass obv the case you have picked out is a legit choice but i do love the case for customizable it is also i like handles on my case by preference |

@ Peace: Donny, you're like a child who wanders into the middle of a movie and wants to know... @ Glitch Yeah, Zotac is a left field thing for me too. I just wanted to get a feel for what people thought of them, as I stand to make a significant savings if they are worth the risk (519.99$ for Zotac 480 + Zalman heatsink attached + overclocked out of the box |OR| 449.99$ MSI 480 stock + 79.99$ Zalman heatsink + Artic silver 5 + time/labor attaching heatsink and overclocking... even more expensive if I go with EVGA). Granted a 10$ difference (and the OCing won't be that bad), but if time is money, I can expect to spend 96$ worth of my time (based on geek squad rates for 2 hours labor with 20% employee discount). From the newegg reviews, it sounds like zotac covers their parts for lifetime if you register... anyone who uses zalman for heatsinks can't be bad... just wondering what the customer service is like... I'm trying to figure out if the risk is worth the reward. Going back to the 1156 vs 1366; yes the lanes lost will make a significant difference. Think of it like a highway: one highway is two lanes, the other is four lanes. They both have the same amount of people that need to go down them , which is going to move them more efficiently? To make matters worse, those cars have to move down the highway in groups of 10 (because that's how many bits must communicate with the cards at a time). Now if you wanted to build a single card rig, the differences would be minimal. Just remember, the whole reason the 1156 series was made was to offer a budget alternative to the 1366s. If you do decide to go with 1156, be careful, and pay attention to the transister size of the cou you want; there are a lot of 45nm dies mixed in with the superior 32nm. |
