Forum Cleanup

Okay, heres some of the things that may make FTC a better forum system for the general public:
0) Nostie - helped me make this site originally, and knows how to use its features inside and out. It would be nice if we could vote him back into admin to help me out. I know him IRL, and trust him not to fuck me over. We would need to set some rules, and address what his ban, or unadminning was because of if we do this. It would help me, and he also calls me when FTC is down on the spot. This has to be a group decision, but he has my vote as being helpful on the website.
1) moving dead (not being used now) forums that still have posts into another parent section at the bottom, "Oldies" or something
2) removing the useless and empty forums like the "admin discussion" which only has 1 post in it.
3) Making the forum page NOT show certain side menus like: server menu, chatbox, online info menu. This would speed up forum loads without a doubt
4) removing useless or old sticky posts (or unstick them) this is essential anyway
5) picture signatures and avatars - they take up about 15% of our current speed. I love them, but should we go to text signature only, and have a size limit on avatars? Example: the last forum page i viewed was 25% avatars and signatures by size, and used higher CPU. Animated ones also take an extra hit on the speed for the site. This one should be a vote.
6) I can attempt to use a NEW, FORUM ONLY theme that would run the forums faster, but would not have the sites features next to the forum pages like chatbox etc. We would be able to switch back to this theme using a dropdown menu. (this is a big step, but its doable)
Please comment on any or all of these. I have made NO decisions yet, and will wait a few days to hear all comments.

Only reason I'd want admin on the site is to fix shit that is fucked up (if I see shit screwed up I want to be able to fix it on the spot rather than asking someone else to figure it out and wasting their time)

i was telling Knightrider that the forums have a very good lay out and they are set up very nice, i know my vote doesnt really count for anything but i say maybe limit the avatars and sig picture sizes a little and it would speed it up. But other than that its a very well put together forum, one of the best ive seen.

I agree with cleaning up the forums, the dead skin of old forums weighs heavily. Regarding the chatbox and server menu, I love seeing that, would that still be on the homepage, just not on the forum page? I would agree with that as well. Thanks for the hard work and coding.

Personally i like this forum style. It is completely different from most forums and has a personal feel to it. Sometimes quality is more important than speed in this case.
I dont know about the rest of you, but i have a simple basic optimum online internet speed and i load every page in less than 2 seconds. Speed is not an issue for me on a PC. Even a wireless connection from my phone loads this in 3 seconds or less.
0 - I already vote yes on Nostie regaining admin. He is older now and it would help to have someone onboard who is as experienced as him with the forums. As i said, if you trust him, i trust him.
1 - yes to the new parent forum labeled "The Golden Oldies."
2 - yes
3 - The only thing i liked on every page was the chatbox. Very convenient. Everything else can go.
4 - yes...but something like this should be left up to specific forum moderators to determine which is still important and which isnt.
5 - Picture avatars and signatures i feel should stay. It gives the clan and forums more "personality" and honestly it helps people get their personality out to everyone else too. There should, however, be a size limit like way back when. I know i have an animated avatar and have had this avatar since the beginning...but i will happily change it for the better of the clan. We should have a vote for a size limitation.
6 - Like i said previously... i like it the way it is. Has a "Fish Tank" feel to it.

If you really want nostie around to help then that's up to you. Your site, your rules. Hopefully this time around he will respect the privacy of others and not abuse his forum admin status.
The admin forum that has one post in it was recently created and, ironically enough, intended to be a place for admins to coordinate the efforts of cleaning up the site.
I'd appreciate it if none of the content was messed with concerning FT Classic. It's very disappointing that a sizable amount of 2005/2006 forum content was lost.
All of the other stuff related to performance is up to you and nostie think it's a good idea then I say go for it.

I also like the feel of the site as is. I'm all for lowering the size of avatars/sigs. I got nothing against nostie, because as I'm sure he is aware that he is walking on eggshells as far as what I can tell from the general consensus. The old stuff, I am behind removing the sticky and putting it into a "golden oldies" as glitch said. Lastly, I love having the chatbox on every screen. I would say keep it that way, just my opinion.

I can live with the extra load time so that i can see all the signatures and avatars. just limit the size of them. It also doesnt help that e107 is a very outdated content management system. There are much better options out there that are significantly faster.

The problem is people have like 4+ quotes in their sig

The quotes in sigs take up no loading time. It is the pictures. But i can see your point on "literal" size.
Re: Forum Cleanup
kremit, Thu Jul 12 2012, 09:04PM
I moved around some of the forums, and made others invisible (ones that had not been posted in for years). Nothing is deleted, just reorganized at the moment. Anything can be undone, and by no means is this a "final layout".
Ill go through peoples signatures on the web server and delete any sigs over 100K in file size. I do not pick and choose, I just remove all large sigs in 1 click.
Im reachable easy this entire week if anyone wants any forum changes back to the original.

it takes me far too long to load a page of posts on one page for 5 comments and 40% signature. I want to consider a rule on that again(?).

All of the old subforums in 'FT Classic Op/Admins Aquarium' don't work anymore. I tried creating a new one and that works, but the old ones do not work.
I'm also curious why this forum was moved to the Golden Oldies section. There was a post in there from last week.

Sorry Rusty I don't come here much but honestly this forum is a nightmare to get around I really think this is a complicated site to use sorry if I'm not I.T savvy as the rest of you fellahs but I find this site hard to use I'm sure others will agree no disrespect to the fellahs that created it I appreciate all the security and stuff but apart from this I find it hard to use. I have four options here preview, reply to thread, post reply and new thread its a bit complicated ok I'm sure if iI spent some time I'd eventually understand it but all I'm saying is make is keep it simple. Its hard to use lads sorry

anyone agree that it could be made more easy ?

Well since it is about the forum I figured id answer the question.
I did used to have the whole forum customized (for simplicity), but the main problem with any forum system is that updates will overwrite any changes made by the person who customized it. In other words, I can choose updates (some of them have major security patches) or I can choose to stay with the most recent version which fixes the security holes.
We were hacked before on this site and its down for a few days at least while I rebuild it from scratch basically. Now I just back it up like crazy. Being hacked is not fun.
New Thread starts a new thread in the current forum
Post Reply will start a fresh page with a complete reply-interface for posting pics etc
Preview and Reply to Thread are both below the box I am typing in called the Quick Reply box.
Preview lets you see your quick reply before posting
Reply to Thread posts your quick reply
Sorry if its confusing, I agree with you.
