Super down for a rerun. I think we all have some old connections to plan something ahead of time, on an updated game, or even outdated, for all of us to do an event on. I would look forward to that very much

Ok so I've been thinking of hosting my own server, a custom maps rotation server. However in looking at it, it looks like there's a decent amount of money to be made in renting servers. Upwards of $50/mo. Question, what is required to pull this off? The demand for servers seems to be high with all these new games eg. COD4, Halo3, etc How many servers can one rig reasonably host and what type of rig am I looking at, expense wise? It just seems like a great business model, right up there with opening a car wash or storage facility. Anyone have any insight on this? |

Don't do it unless you have something to back it up. Game server companies that are fresh rarely make any money which is why we see so many GSPs (game server providers) come and go. My advice, don't even bother. |

hardware costs are nothing you need bandwidth, and that will cost upwards of 1000 a month. | ||

In reality it is not difficult. With that said, is there money in it? I say no, not unless A. You get good deals at a data center. AND B. Get good deals on hardware..... A reputable GSP said this.... "We run 6 x 16 Player SRCDS on DUAL Xeon 3.0GHz (or better) Servers with 3GB of RAM with bonded dual 1Gb Switched and Load Balanced Network Connections into 1Gbps or 10Gbps BackBones with a 66 tickrate. So when I say good hardware with good Network Connectivity, this is the benchmark I am basing my opinions on." I have been thinking of starting a GSP business for the last year but can't bring myself to do it since I don't think there is a justifiable amount of money in it. Datacenters in big cities such as Chicago are ridiculous. Around my area I can rent 1U for about 50 bucks, thats connected to 100Mb line with 1000GB a month. In chicago you will be looking at THREE times that with LESS bandwidth. Edited Sun Mar 09 2008, 03:45PM |

The money killer is the bandwidth. Its expensive. Make sure you have deals going down before you start your server hosting or you will experience heavy loss. I would say you need to invest about six grand. probably more. Edited Sun Mar 09 2008, 04:16PM |
