Super down for a rerun. I think we all have some old connections to plan something ahead of time, on an updated game, or even outdated, for all of us to do an event on. I would look forward to that very much

i would have to say that i'm an agnostic atheist. I tend to lean away from religion because of the things i've seen and experienced, but i just don't know. One thing that i did find hilarious though that doesn't halp christians case for me is something i found out the other day taking a little quiz on the mythbusters website on wether certain myths are true or not. And apparently jim caviezziel (the guy who played jesus in the passion of the christ) was struck by lightning during the filming of the movie. The assistant director Jim or mike something was also hit. As for religion being the cause for most wars, definetly not true, i believed it once myself but if you really think about it it's bullshit. However i do believe that without religion there would be a lot fewer wars. Wars are started for greed and personal gain. Religion however is the one thing that can be easily manipulated to get millions of stupid people to fight over something noone in their right mind would fight over just because you relate it to something of a higher power or purpose. Religion isn't the only way to do it, but it's the most common and most easily available. |

You can threaten a man with pain, suffering, and death; but they won't follow your orders until you tell them that when they die they will go to an eternal bed of flames unless they follow your command.

"A religion is a set of beliefs and practices generally held by a human community, involving adherence to codified beliefs and rituals and study of ancestral or cultural traditions, writings, history, and mythology, as well as personal faith and mystic experience. The term "religion" refers to both the personal practices related to communal faith and to group rituals and communication stemming from shared conviction."

I haven't read this entire thread, as I simply don't have that much time, and I'm sure I've heard every theory / argument before, but I would like to add my ideas anyways. My interest in religion was sparked by George Carlin, whom someone quoted a few pages back. George Carlin has an amazing point about the complete nonsensicalness of religion. However, his message reaches so few people, and penetrates even fewer minds, for 2 very important reasons. First of all, the way he chooses to say his views are counter productive for explaining the flaws in religion. To begin a debate with calling someones most profound beliefs, as bullshit, whether they are or not, is a bad idea. People will naturally take offense to this, and go on the defensive, and continue hearing him, but with a closed mind. Second is the complete brain washing. Think of it this way. If someone walked up to you today, and told you that Osama bin- Laden was hiding inside your computer, and that he had shrunk himself down to a size at which he could both fit in there, and be able to run on a miniature hampster wheel that kept your computer going, you would understand that that is both impossible, and stupid. However, if 2 people you respected, both biologically and from experience, told you this, from the day you were born, and raised you in a community where everyone believed this is where bin-Laden was hiding, you would accept it. Sure, it's still completely stupid, and physically impossible, but you have been brainwashed. Religion does the same thing, and that's the only reason people believe it. If you really think about it logically, with an open mind (which I doubt any of you who are already religious will), you will see my point. You read a book, with NO sources whatsoever, that claims things that go against every understood law of science. Even the most basic idea of creation goes against the first law of physics! Additionally, this book is almost 2000 years old! It was even written by people who already believed these things! Do you trust a 2000 year old book, written by impressionable young fisherman more than the brilliant minds of Einstein, Newton (on scientific basis'), or Dawkins (on religion)? Another important theme of religion is the soul. I am here challenging the very existance of such a thing. There are only 2 ways something can exist in this world. It can be physical, or mental. Religion claims the soul leaves our body when we die, so therefore, if it's physical, the body must immediately decrease in weight, right? If something is physical it MUST have some mass, or weight. The only weight that leaves the human body when we die is all our excrement. If your gonna try to tell me the human soul is a giant pile of shit, I think we could have some problems in debating here. After being told this, most people tell me the soul is a mental thing. Well, if this is the argument we choose to side with, there are just as many glaring problems there. What exactly is something that is "mental". That simply means it is controlled by your brain. If your brain no longer functions, therefore anything that is mental, ceases to function. When you die, your brain stops working. D'oh! With the soul disproved, "God's" very system of judging our "Souls" becomes a little shaky. Those are the basic reasons I don't believe in God. Many people will say the soul exists in a spiritual sense, which we've never seen any evidence for even existing. Do you wanna spend your life praying, bowing your head, and wasting your Sunday mornings over a guess that a separate, unproved, plane of existance exists? |

Thanks for the timely response, L3mur. Your post was only 107 days after the last one (if my math is correct). Boy, I'm glad you finally had a chance to put your two cents in. Good job, dude. But, wait! Don't stop here! There are thousands of threads in the "Schooling Fish" forum on which you can post as well. There are 46 pages of threads dating all the way back to May 27, 2006. I'm sure your input is needed on those as well. Better put a pot of coffee on! It's going to be a long night. Edited Fri Aug 03 2007, 12:52AM |

It appears the idea of better late than never is strangely absent here. I only recently found this thread, and was interested in adding my opinion, and possibly striking up a new interest in it. This thread was recently linked to from a newer thread regarding religion, so you can hardly blame me for following a recent discussion back to its source. |
