I smoked pot all through high school & through college. I would drink my ass off as a bartender Thurs-Sun. Sometimes I would drink & smoke before class if I felt like. I attended "study groups" with Gatorade bottles filled halfway with vodka or rum. I had a 3.68 GPA. I've never failed a class. I have 2 Associate Degrees in Civil Engineering & Engineering Science & 3/4's of my Bachelor's in Civil Engineering (finishing part time... I make more money than I could as an engineer so that priority dropped). I'm literally one of the smartest people I know. Here's the thing. Drugs & Alcohol don't make you stupid. If you're drinking & drugging & you're stupid, odds are you were stupid to begin with. However (in defense of your shrink) drugs & alcohol are excellent facillitators of stupidity. In other words, if you're borderline stupid already or if you lack will power to do the bare minimum or if you have an addictive personality & are naturally adverse to hard work. motivation & determination. Drugs & alcohol could very easily deter you from doing anything productive. Odds are you aren't incredibly gifted, unusually bright or particularly strong willed. I would suggest avoiding drugs & alcohol in excess (or entirely) if you find that they are in anyway impeding your ability to achieve your goals. Or if you lack goals, I would develop some first (lofty ones) & then figure out if drugs & alcohol are preventing you from reaching them. This was never a problem for me so I said "what the fuck... I can work hard & get an A+ or I can get wasted off my ass, not go to class, not do homework & just ace tests & get a B... fuck it close enough is good enough" Little bit longer of a post then I would like. But here's a current update. I have since realized that I have a serious problem with alcohol & most likely am an alcoholic. Probably have been for a long time and always will be. As I got older... the opportunity for fucking up hardcore only grew as I drank more and developed more responsibilities. Eventually it got to the point where the risks associated with drinking were too great, in fact there were no rewards. But consequences there were... many many consequences in every major category of my life. Reputation, Health, Money, Freedom, Relationships, Jobs... you name it, I lost it because of alcohol... Sometimes you have to lose everything before you can gain anything. I no longer drink (at all been sober for 3 months) I smoke occassionally but I've never felt better. I'm happy, I'm aware & coherent, I'm healthy, I'm motivated & generally grateful for my life. But when I was drinking & drugging, I was also going to school full time, working full time (at my current job) & bartending part time. And I did that for about 3 years (18-21) before any serious consequences were felt. And I did it successfully... so I dunno... It's an individual thing. To answer your question, pot won't make you stupid, but if you're already stupid, you might want to avoid it & focus on productive activities. Edited Tue Sep 09 2008, 11:22PM |

No Nostie... that means if 1000 college students smoke pot, 10 of them graduate... There is a double negative with the word "don't" at the end but the point is clear enough. Take the word "don't" out and it reads perfectly. Btw, those statistics are bullshit, ask what organizations performed those studies, when they were performed, how many students were included in the survey, how those students were selected (was it at random), how often did they smoke pot, was pot the only drug they were doing, if not what other drugs were they on and how does that compare to the percentage of students that don't graduate AND don't smoke pot. There's no way in hell those statistics are accurate. 1 out of 100 potheads graduates college? Ya fuck you, I got a dozen friends who beg to differ. |

Here's a real study... you know with legit methods used, references, analysis, etc. -[link]- Here's a good gist: Completers (n=7) and dropouts (n=13) did not differ significantly on mean age (completers=30.0, SD 5.0, dropouts= 31.2, SD 9.6); education (completers=14.6 years, SD 2.8; dropouts=13.4 years, SD 2.3) or mean years using marijuana (completers=12.1, SD 7.3; dropouts=13.1, SD 7.8). In other words the dropouts used marijuna only SLIGHTLY more than the completers. But look at this: They also did not differ on ethnicity (43% of completers, 31% of dropouts were white); full-time employment (57% of completers, 46% of dropouts); being married (14% of completers, 15% of dropouts); using alcohol (29% of completers, 15% of dropouts) or using cocaine (0% of completers, 15% of dropouts). ALMOST TWICE AS MANY COMPLETERS OF COLLEGE ARE USING ALCOHOL AS OPPOSED TO DROPOUTS!!! LoL I found that funny. But 15% of dropouts were using coke as opposed to 0% of completers... lol that's funny too. But the gist of the study is that the use of marijuana did not significantly affect the difference between completers & dropouts. Dropouts were slightly more prone to marijuna use probably for the same reasons I mentioned above. The drug itself won't make you dropout, but if you're already uninspired, unmotivated or distracted from your studies... well then marijuana is only going to further distract you. it doesnt really matter all that much if you do blaze.. the only thing that really matters is WHEN you do. you can smoke on sundays... just make sure you dont go to bed baked. as awesome and good as it feels, your body can't get good sleep and you feel like you slept on the hardwood floor all night. basically, you cant really treat it like you're gonna do it only at parties and shit... you just have to smoke when its the most intelligent and efficient time to. |
