So, I just saw Religulous. Don't be mistaken; this movie is not about religion. It's about how Bill Maher thinks that he is never, and will never be, wrong. Rather than just interviewing Priests, Rabbis, or Religious Authorities, Maher makes a point to find the most wacko, depraved, ignorant, racist, terrorist, self-hating, and/or homosexual believers and tell them to their face that he thinks he's better than them because he gave up religion as a teenager. I have never, to any extent, been offended by the content or plot of a film up until this point, and I'm not remotely a religious person. The movie plays out like this: Bill Maher starts his quest in a "Trucker Church" which is inside the cargo-box of a semi. He harasses people, makes false and unsupported claims about their religion, makes fun of them with subtitles, and occasionally slips in a clip of Jesus being slapped in the face. He interviews an Anti-Semitic Jew who meets with the president of Iran (The one who doesn't believe in the Holocaust), but is so pissed at not being able to tweak the argument into a quip about the mental capacity of said Jew that he leaves the interview halfway through. If you want proof that investigative journalism is dead, please watch this film. There were very few redeeming qualities to this movie. The laughs are shallow and rare, Maher doesn't really cite any information, yet continues to make outrageous claims about whatever religion he's bastardizing, and he intentionally interviews uneducated people to further the means of this movie. Said means are really just to claim religion causes all the world's problems, that Americans are, like a certain Senator said, "Bitter Americans, clinging to their guns and religion with antipathy towards those who aren't like them", and to reiterate the main theme of this documentary: Bill Maher is never wrong. There were maybe three interesting interviews in which he didn't blatantly attack his targets. Two were at the Vatican. The first and by far the most interesting was a discussion with the Vatican's Priest who studies Astrology and other related sciences. He (the Priest), made a great point about religious fundamentalism. From 2000 BC to around 300 AD, the Scriptures were written. From maybe 1500 until now, we've learned sciences and mathematics. There is no relation; they don't overlap. He states that interpreting modern breakthroughs in science into religious aspects is absurd. The Priest does a good point at suggesting that Science is more often right than Religion. Keep in mind, this is a Catholic Priest employed by the Vatican. Let me make clear though that he doesn't make his claims in Maher's style; He does it with respect and intelligence. I give this film a D-, the only reason it gets a grade at all is the scene at the Vatican and the Muslim getting a text message during his interview (You'll never guess what his ring-tone is). P.S. if you want to see a good, and despite what the media says, unbiased documentary about religion, may I suggest "Obsession". It goes in depth into Radical Islam (I assure you, it is not racist republican propaganda like everyone says) and its effects on the world. |

LoL! This movie sounds Hillary-ous! I think it’s a limited release and only showing in 500 (or so) theatres. I've been trolling my favourite movie streaming sites and have yet to come across a cam version of it. (No love for torrents and not worth the money in theatres.) Bill Maher isn't an "investigative journalist" and any quasi-Michael Moorish approach is probably intended to be satirical at best. Not having seen the movie, if he is genuinely attempting to appear credible or trying to make persuasive arguments (while shitting on those he is 'interviewing'), then he's probably a bigger douchenozzle than we expected. I'm pretty sure Billy didn't make this movie hoping to cash in with huge box office returns, and I'm sure he realizes that he has effectively alienated a large chunk of current and would-be viewers and listeners. (Is he still doing TV and Radio?) Media outlets may be wary of picking up his shows and hardcore Religulous people might boycott or protest his public appearances. I wouldn't be surprised if he received a death threat or two. I 'Believe' that the point of making an obscenely controversial film such as this would be to promote open discussion and challenge people to objectively (heck even rationally) re-evaluate what they believe, and why they believe it. If similar threads to this one are being posted and blogged all across the Internetz, then perhaps Billy has achieved his goal. Hopefully those slacker bootleggers will get off their arses and cam a good copy before the week’s out. [Or better yet, they should hand off the camera to Jerry Seinfeld… Cry, Cry Again was sweet. ] I saw a Doc from the BBC (The Brits are Crazy) a while back and I’m pretty sure it was the “inspiration” behind Religulous. Its hosted by Richard Dawkins -[link]- , yes the scholar/academic/intellectual from all of the Science textbooks. I think this is the type of movie that Bill Maher was trying to make. The Root of All Evil? - Part 1 ‘The God Delusion’: -[link]- Part 2 ‘The Virus of Faith’: -[link]- This film is perhaps the “real” Religulous and probably closer to what people expected when they went to the theatres. [Here’s a Doc that was aired nationally on the CBC a little while ago (The Canucks are Crazy too!) that takes a look at the idea of a ‘historical Jesus’ and the roots of Christian belief. A few of the authors whose works were cited as sources for the movie “Zeitgeist” are actually interviewed in this movie, and backed up with slightly more credible historical data. (Don't worry, there's no mention of the movie Zeitgeist or its irrational claims/shitty music.) If you are interested in history, Egyptology, pre-Christian society,,, then you might find this to be an interesting film. “Pagan Christ” Part 1: -[link]- Part 2: -[link]- Part 3: -[link]- Part 4: -[link]- Part 5: -[link]- b4ndito wrote ... Speaking of racism and crap... Sony was supposed to release a game named "Littlebigplanet" (see sig below) Apparently they had a song from the Qur'an in the game that was written by a muslim. Sony started receiving letters on how that song is so offensive to Muslims. So now the release date for it is the 27th instead of the 21st... and they may even delay it more... all because of one word in one song written by a muslim that offends muslims. Anyways here is the song: -[link]- Btw I dont wanna see religilous, those type of movies are not my type. BBtw I felt like posting this because i spent last night crying.
