Super down for a rerun. I think we all have some old connections to plan something ahead of time, on an updated game, or even outdated, for all of us to do an event on. I would look forward to that very much

I want to and believe I should be able to carry a concealed firearm on my campus. It is against dorm policy (all of them) to keep a gun on campus and it's against university police policy to carry a concealed firearm. (I could have a gun on campus, but I'd have to allow the university police hold it for me in between shooting range sessions.) I just don't understand the logic behind disallowing 21 year olds that would be able to carry any other place in the state from doing so on campus. The standard counter-argument is that college kids party, get drunk, and do stupid/risky things. Guess what: I'm not one of those people. Also guess what: I'm not the only one. If the idiots did something stupid enough, they wouldn't be able to attain a concealed carry permit and/or firearm and wouldn't be able to carry anyway. Those who don't want to carry firearms are afraid of those who have them. I say don't be afraid. If some madman starts shooting, we're the one who might just save you. I welcome a responsible, armed society. Where do you guys stand? Do you think it's silly of me to want to carry a gun on campus? Let me know. |

there is no NEED!!.... for firearms on campuses (you mean colleges and universities?), you must be sick or something. even if there might be a person who wants to go mad and shoot other students, doesn't mean you are conveniently around with a firearm to shoot him before he/she shoots more. You know how big a school is? Only a handful would decide to take that responsibility to carry a hand gun around, not the majority. Plus, accidents can happen (obviously) and if there are more people carrying firearms, the greater the chance for an accident. And who or what kind of stranger would support anyone else, other than themselves to take the responsibility of carrying a firearm in the campus. Sometimes my school has bears coming around, that's the only time I can think of to use a gun. But on the other hand, I'm all for being able to carry a gun once you get your driver's license, like in Texas, right? But not in campuses where you are exposed to friends and hundreds of students who want to fool around. |

If concealed carry is allowed, I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one to take up the responsibility. Hell, if there's 3 people per lecture hall who carry I'd be more than happy. slick wrote ... And who or what kind of stranger would support anyone else, other than themselves to take the responsibility of carrying a firearm in the campus. We support police carrying firearms. They're complete strangers to me. I'd trust any other citizen to do the same. If they're willing to take up the responsibility, I welcome them. slick wrote ... But not in campuses where you are exposed to friends and hundreds of students who want to fool around. Why not on campuses? Don't you think 21 year olds all over the nation go out with their friends and want to fool around? They're allowed to carry. Why not me? Edited Mon Apr 04 2011, 05:09AM |

Doesn't matter if people support or don't support, the choice was made for us already for police to carry firearms, you can't use police example. They go through qualified training, anyway. What might usually happen is that the 21 year old will allow a friend or anyone to hold it and handle it once someone asks them. that's the major problem, nobody can control. "Hey, can i see the gun?" "Yeah, here you go." If your friend, doesn't let you see the gun (touch it and stuff like that) then you might feel bummed out and try to convince him more, everyday. If the only way a person (an average joe) is allowed to have a concealed weapon, or even an exposed weapon, is through a rigorous qualified training and interviews, background checks, etc. yearly then I'd settle with that and vote for it, you didn't mention that. |

You can always hand over the gun unloaded? I'm sure it takes like 5 seconds to do. And I'm sure a "friend" would understand if you wouldn't hand them over a loaded firearm. |

That's really a silly way of looking at things. First of all, it's a concealed weapon for a reason... your friends don't need to know you're carrying. If you tell them, it's also reasonable that they wouldn't ask to see it. That's brandishing and is illegal. (understandably so)... Also, it's irresponsible to take out a gun unless you're putting it away or if you're taking it out to engage a threat. @slick I'm not against background checks (they're required to purchase a gun and to get concealed carry permits) and I wouldn't be against being required to take a course in firearm safety. I'd find an issue in it if it got overbearing so that those who would carry are discouraged by the amount of work necessary to continue doing so (for instance, if semi-annual courses needed to be taken to re-affirm your concealed carry permit). I'm all for intelligent, responsible gun-handling. P.S. Kool-Aid, it would take less than a second to take out the mag and rack the slide to pop the round out of the chamber. |

from an administrative stand point i can for sure understand their side of the argument the general population is stupid therefore safety is all about avoiding putting said stupid people in a situation to use their stupidity you should never underestimate stupid people minimize the opportunities for stupid actions and you have vastly improved the safety of the campus in this situation |

This is a college campus, not the general population. (either way...) I do agree with you though. I wouldn't mind some sort of test and/or few hour course on handling a firearm, reacting to a situation where you gun needs to be drawn, etc... I just don't think stopping people from carrying guns is legitimate and/or possible. (maybe if there was a nationwide ban on guns and the government actually followed through with it and got them all out it would work, as in the UK, but how well is the "war on drugs" doing?) |

- Try dealing with the PR after making an announcement allowing guns to be allowed on campuses. Wait a couple of generations for people to forget about the virginia shootings...provided another shooting doesn't happen until then - TL:DR its not you we're worried about nostie. Nostie you do realize slick is a bot. You have arguing with a bot for half of this thread a bot Edited Tue Apr 05 2011, 03:11AM |

Insurance. A lot of colleges can't even have a 6m high dive board at their pool because it's expensive to cover anyone that will go off it. |
