Super down for a rerun. I think we all have some old connections to plan something ahead of time, on an updated game, or even outdated, for all of us to do an event on. I would look forward to that very much

The machine at 64.83.52.226 which serves up the practice server as well as FTC2 is in a colocation facility that a friend of mine rents to me for free. I've stated this several times in the past year. Tek and anyone else who is interested: I have tried hosting with Art of War Central and Recon Gamer. AOWC is cheap and their tech support is fucking awesome. The performance of their servers left something to be desired, though. I tried hosting out of their Northern VA datacenter as well as Chicago and both were pretty crappy. I didn't try Dallas, which if I recall, is where FT Surf is located and DarkNarf is happy with that so who knows. I tinkered with my CS:S/HL2 client rate, update rate, command rate, etc. and still ended up seeing client choke as well as packet loss. Recon Gamer is where FTC1 is hosted. It looks expensive, and comes with a bunch of additional services you probably don't need, but I got a coupon for $20 off for as long as the server is hosted there, so it comes out to be about the same price as AOWC give or take $10/month. I've been impressed with the performance of the server there. It hasn't been 100% perfect as we were having these 60-300 second waves of lag a few times per week where everyone's ping would shoot up to 500 and made playing impossible. I put in a few requests to have them check it out. I never heard back either time, but I haven't seen those lag waves in the past two weeks or so. Maybe they're still happening... but I've been more-or-less happy with RG's performance, and less than thrilled with their support. There are shitloads of other hosting companies out there but between RG and AOWC I would suggest giving AOWC a try out of their Dallas facility. Also, Tek, offering up a server for the FT community is precisely why I am here. I was having no luck on my own running a CS:S server last year, saw how busy the FT (called Digital Anarchy at the time) was, and made a deal with krem and Ian. The deal was that they would advertise for me on their server (this is extremely important when starting a new server) and they would decide how the server would be run. I, in exchange, got the thrill of having a CS:S server that actually had people playing on it! Things have changed a bit since then, and krem and Ian let me go off and do my own thing. |

Ever since I started mapping, I wanted to run a server for my custom maps. I have a basic (and I mean BASIC) knowlegde in C++, so I can figure out most problems I encounter when mapping. Now, would running a server require an advanced knowlege in computer language, or can any n00b pick up on it. Also, is running a server a 24/7 job (I'd imagine at first it is), or is there a level of stability you can reach where you only have to check on it once a week or so? Also, my problem here is I don't even know where to start when it comes to starting/running a server. Does anyone have some advice, or can they point me to a tutorial? I've been willing to take the initiative for a while now, I just haven't made an effort to take the first steps. Consider this my first step. No offense Kalibur, but Fetus is right. If you want something in life, YOU have to take the initiative to get it. This is something everyone learns the hard way. I've been putting off my initiative, but now that the topic has come up, I've decied to do something about it. |

Toasters, the technical aspects are easy to grasp, especially when you're renting. Maintaining the equipment yourself adds some complexity, but running a server or renting revolve more around administrative skills and, most importantly, knowing how to effectively delegate authority to others. If you have a beefy machine you can run the server off of a residential line (cable, DSL, etc.) but it's uncommon that residential lines include a static IP address as well as enough upstream bandwidth to handle more than 10 or so players. If you do have a decent connection and server this is a good place to get the bare esentials: -[link]- After you've got the server up and running you'll want to explore things like ticrate: -[link]- It's also beneficial to lurk through the HLDS mailing lists: -[link]- which is also a good place to ask for help. Renting is probably the way you want to go, though. Either way, you will want to install server plugins like Beetles Mod, Mani Mod, etc. for admin functions, stats, etc. There's also log-parsing tools like psychostats, hlstatsx, etc. It can be time-consuming, but after the fine-tuning is over and you've got people helping you out it's not that bad. Let me know if you're serious about trying to run a server and I'll give you a hand if you want. |

Thanks, for the advice alex. Yes I am serious about running a server, but right now, I have a full time job that won't allow me to devote much time to setting up a server. In about 6 weeks, I am quitting to go back to college. Then I will have plenty of free time to run a server. I figured I would use the time I have now to research what one needs to do to start/run a server, so I can be ready when I do decide to start a server. | ||
