Running... Always running. Prompted by motives indescribable, I pushed. I pushed like my life depended on it. Swarms of them hunted me. Survival was only putting off the inevitable fact that haunted me. I would become one with the fallen. I walked into the cool breeze. The end of summer stalked me like one of them. The crackling of leaves under my feet, the howl of a harsh wind. I detested the irony of my situation. Death was imminent; breath came in gasps as I ran and ran, followed by an unceasing enemy. My camp was just shy of a quarter mile away by my hurried estimation. Though my breath was short, some unidentifiable motive pushed me. Was this what Darwin described? Was I alone fit to survive among the incestuous, cannibalistic horde that tailed me so closely? The wolves began to howl. Night was approaching. The broken buildings, the burning streets. Chaos seemed improper for the town that I had once called home. A town that had once been so welcoming now seemed distant. I continued on, the pattering of heavy footsteps close behind. Sweat blinded me; it felt like ice. My destination was so very close now, but my body screamed in agony. I could hear the screams. My legs tensed up, the cramp in my stomach grew tighter. I felt an upheaval in my stomach. I stalled. If I let them overtake me, my fear would be gone. I would join them that I feared ever so much. I welcomed death for the first time. I was drenched in cold. I felt my body shriek in pain for a second that would never end. My forehead was splitting. I felt as one with the cold steel that split my body and soul.
