I won't be on Counter Strike this week probably at all, but I would like to have some help from the Google geniuses that populate this forum. I have to do a report and a Powerpoint on what I am doing once I graduate high school. I plan to major in Computer Information and Sciences. I am going to do research on what that actually is, but I can't find any site that explains what it is. As far as jobs go, I'm using Monster.com and just putting in what major or type of job I am looking for and what degrees it requires to go into that job. My principle said that it has to be 3 pages long, however, since it is a report it should be about 10 pages long. So I'm going to research the jobs individually too. But right now all I'm asking is if someone can link me to something where it explains what it is. |

Basically I'm looking for what you study in that field. And after you graduate, what kinds of jobs you can gain experience from and then types of jobs that are offered. I think I am good on the types of jobs that are offered part, it was just a detailed explanation on what you actually study in that field. | ||

Man knight, you're lucky I clicked on this thread. Currently I'm in the IT program at my college, and if you want to be in demand right after you graduate, that is the field you'd probably do best in. Demand for employees in the IT field is predicted to grow 30% within the next 10 years, with starting salaries up to $50,000... which is insane. What IT mostly deals with is business Security (preventing attacks on servers, software updates, debates on whether to upgrade to Vista or stay with XP, controlling who has access to what, etc...); Networking (getting the printer to talk to the desktop, setting up a new server [if you were ever a cs op, you know what this is all about]); Database Management (maintaining employee databases, working with MS Office Access, working with Oracle); and Programming (writing programs to perform repettative tasks, working with Visual Basic, working with Java, Algorithmic thinking) Any programming field, although they pay more, is very difficult to get hired into right out of college. Basically, any job you take as a green programmer, you will COST a company money for about 6 months, due to your mistakes, and tying up the other experienced programmers to fix them. On the downside, since computer science is always evolving lightning fast, by the time you graduate, half of what you learned will already be obsolete. The main thing companies are looking for in the comp sci field is experience. Now do you see the paradox? you're fresh out of college and in debt, but with no experience, no one will want to hire you; but if you can't get hired, how do you get experience? The best way to go about this is summer internships. Don't think of them as an internship, but an extended job interview. What often happens is if a company likes you, they will hire you and encourage you to take night classes. If they don't like you, well fuck them, and just put down you have experience on your resume for the next company you try. Lol thanks Toasters for the advice, but for my senior project I have to do what I chose to do, because it has to be approved. As far as your explanation links and stuff to what your answers were would be great. I have to cite where I got my information on a works cited and shit like that, so yeah. | ||

The information you provided on Wikipedia provides a lot of answers to my question. However, since the info that is entered can be changed and isn't by anyone such as a professor, I'm not sure if they will take it as a good source. Do you think you could find something like that that is given by someone credible? |
