Super down for a rerun. I think we all have some old connections to plan something ahead of time, on an updated game, or even outdated, for all of us to do an event on. I would look forward to that very much

Since everyone wants to post about "their music," I figured I would post about the music that I love. I wonder if anyone out there actually listens to blues music and can compete their knowledge against mine in this catagory.
With my understanding of music, I feel as if today's music just would not exist without the blues that started in the early 1900's. Slaves used to sing while they worked in a system known today as "Call and Response." The lead singer would say a line like "I'll be picking this cotton all day." And the rest of the workers would respond saying "He'll be working all day." This would go on for an other round or two, then he'd finish it off with something like " But I don't want to work no more." Then an other worker would take the lead. This type of song would help the slaves get through their day, and it would last, all day.
When blacks started to get their freedoms in the late 1920's early 1930's, they started playing juke joints. There would be one performer usually as in these blues musicians did not have the money for the new electric equipment that was out. This lone performer would stop his feet for the bass line and play his guitar. Many musicians from the 1930's became highly popular locally, such as howlin wolf and Son House (many others, but don't feel like listing them). But there was one guitarist to be known, as maybe the greatest guitarist of all time, Robert Johnson. He had three days in his life to record his music, in 1937. The story with him is that of a great folklore, about the devil and the crossroads.
This folklore made teh blues the devils music, and was disliked by many chatholics, but these musicians kept playing.
Now after a quick history of the blues, lets look at it's influences? The blues revival took play in the early 1960's starting in London. Eric Clapton, The Beatles, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page. These were just a couple of the heads of it. The revival had people like Muddy Waters, BB King and Son House playing. You can hear the blues in most of the 1960's and 1970's rock and roll. Lets take some examples. A Hard Day's night by the beatles is a I IV V pattern, which is the universal guitar pattern for a blues song (Musicians will know what this means better then non). Even the batman theme follows that pattern. Great musicians who you might like like Bob Dylan, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, and even the Red Hot Chilli Peppers have recorded many blues songs. R&B music can be traced back to the chanting of the slaves, and so can Rap. I mean, it's biggest influence was easily in rock and roll, but it has had an impact in all of todays music, including modern classical.
The Bealtes never would have been big, meaning the Yardbirds never would have formed, meaning Led Zeppelin would have never existed. The likes of Elvis and Johnny Cash would never would have happened, or atleast have been the same. Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimi Hendrix never would have played the guitar. The Soul singing of R&B wouldn't have been started, so rap never would have formed. Just think of the impact the blues have had to today'a music!
Now after all that, if you do listen to the blues, I'd like to hear who your favorite blues musicians are. My favorites go from SRV, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Rory Gallagher (check him out) to the early stuff of Robert Johnson and Son house. There are more, like Cream, Eric Clapton, The Allman Brothers, Pink Floyd and I could list for ages. Also ACDC with Bon Scott, their blues stuff was amazing. Listen to Night Prowler and The Jack. Now lets hear your favorites!
Now for your enjoyment, A blues, jazz, swing piece

I didn't realize the blues was such a modern thing. Living next to New Orleans, all i've grown up with is raspy voices and shitty saxaphone sounds. Blues is actually not bad. Weeee thanks rusty....an btw...and avatar! -[link]- Edited Sat Aug 05 2006, 08:00PM | ||

Lol wu, kd, jazz fusion is usually combined with blues, but other wise, it is simp0le to pick out jazz and blues. First of all, jazz usually has all the instuments, and plays a little differently, like "weird" chords such as 7ths 9ths 13ths etc. And everyone else, can you guys name some blues players you like? |
