Super down for a rerun. I think we all have some old connections to plan something ahead of time, on an updated game, or even outdated, for all of us to do an event on. I would look forward to that very much

Ok, so currently Im running an Intel Pentium D, dual core on a Foxcon 45CM-S mobo. It isn't really giving me the results Id like with my 8600 GT gfx card. Now I've found a second hand PC that a guy had his buddy do some upgrading. I went to his house to look at it and I ran a system DxDiag from the run function. It has an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ at 2.2 GHz, now I know the mother board in this computer would also have a limiting or gain factor in proformance, although I don't know what kind of Mobo he has in it. But he's got an Nvidia 9500 GT which I'm assuming would substantially increase my graphic range. He also said that the Athlon is a dual core, buuut Im not quite sure if it actually is. Ive done some looking around on google and from what it seems, its a single channel processor, or single Core? From what I gather, they both OC pretty well, but the 3500 is better. Any input from you tech savy folk out there? Thanks. |

Oh boy... u have a lot to learn my dear. The athlon is a single core... and is pretty much the AMD counterpart to what you already have... only worse cuz its a single core. And the 9500GT will give you absolute minimal increases in performance. The only bonus is the 9 series GPUs always overclocked extremely well. I was pushing 22% overclock on my 9600GT core clock and close to 30% on the memory clock... with a single slot solution card and using only the fan. My opinion...? Build from scratch. Glitch literally said everything I was about to say. A gt 8600 is about equal to a gt 9500 (no real big difference between the 8's and 9's). How much was this guy asking for the pc (anything over 200 would be straight up robery/rape)? Whenever you buy into old hardware, you're buying into a big failure waiting to happen. If you can wait it out, pci express 3.0 is right around the corner, and by the time it's out, you'll have more money saved up to spend on a computer.

So instead of that original mess I was talking about, Im going to buy an MSI P55A-G55 mother board, and an Intel i5 760 quad core. Then when I can also affor a new gfx card I will get one. Edited Tue Oct 05 2010, 02:23AM

All Nvidia does now is rebrands a lot of their shit. What a sucker that guy was for trying to get you to buy that. If you need something cheap, like a 400 dollar range computer, let me build it for you. I'm a master at that shit.

the i5 760 is a solid choice, best bang for your buck if you are willing to spend $200 for a cpu. obv the p55 is nearly the only legitimate choice for your build. also for a gpu i'd suggest a hd 5750. i got mine for $120 and it runs everything i throw at it and i run dual monitors (22 inch and 25 inch) this thing would rape your old card. |

I have the same mobo in my server (the same one I was hosting two css servers simultaneously with). Very solid, and probably averages about a 2-3 month uptime. i5 is also a good choice, just don't plan on sli (barely enough pci lanes to make it worth it). There is no real need for an i7 yet (unless you are hosting a server, or running heavily threaded apps like photoshop, or warcraft)
