I've been given this computer from a mate of mine and I was wondering what I need to do to it to get in to run Counter Strike. When it comes to computers I am flailing in the dark so any help would be appreciated. I got this information by using 'dxdiag' Operating System: Windows Vista Home Basic (6.0 Build 6000) System Manufacturer: Acer System Model: Aspire M1640 Processor: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 440 @ 2.00GHz ~2.0GHZ Memory: 446MB RAM Page FIle: 626MB used, 816MB available Direct Version: DirectX 10 Display Manufacturer: NVIDIA Chip Type: GeForce 7100/NIVDIA nForce 620i DAC Type: Integrated RAMDAC Aprox. Firstly is it a desktop or a laptop? Either way more ram is needed. Download cPuid so we can see something other than microsofts inaccurate bullshit. You'll want a better gpu if you can fit it but the stock psu will fry any new card anyway. Better off building new IMO. Psu Gpu Ram Install win xp and forget about win 7 or vista |

I say RAM first scope...unless thats a typo, 1gb is needed for xp, 2gb of vista/7. You should be able to find 1gb ddr2 sticks for ~$10 on the net or local stores (not big box) Then get the hell away from vista if possible, go find an old xp disc or dl a win7 disc. Once new windows is on, you're gonna want to go into msconfig and take out all the bullshit that has no business running in the background. If you're keeping the pc long run, look into budget GPU/PSU. No point splurging on $150+ gpu when its running a celeron... Plus if everything is stock, the 250 watt PSU inside isnt going handle a full-sized card

If you already aren't running a cfg with CS:S this might get some performance out of your computer, such as this one: -[link]- This will maximize performance by disabling some bells and whistles. |

I might invest in the RAM then if it's as cheap as Cha says and then look for the others if that isn't enough. I'm not looking for a powerful computer just something that will run CS on minimum. I tried playing with a laptop and an old usb mouse but as some of you saw earlier I was terrible. I think to start my best best bet is the RAM and find a copy of win XP, I don't have a great deal of money at the moment so I might see if those two and the cfg mentioned by Night_Ninja will run it and if it doesn't then move on to the other ones you mentioned Phate. Thanks for the help. I also need to buy a wireless adapter for the computer as well which is another ball ache. |
