Super down for a rerun. I think we all have some old connections to plan something ahead of time, on an updated game, or even outdated, for all of us to do an event on. I would look forward to that very much

alright, so as a technofiend, i get a lot of computers to fix in my spare stime. Old pieces of junk that the old people down the street don't want to get rid of to new high end gaming machines that I'm currently building for a customer. Anyways, a little problem came up with this new tower i recieved.... The guy said the monitor doesn't work when he pushed the power button so naturally i figured he did something stupid inside the case. I unplugged everything that wasn't necessary for the computer to run. Basically, its just power supply, hard drive with OS already installed, keyboard, and monitor (mine so i know its working). The thing powers up, the hard drive is fine i already tested that piece, and its not the power supply because...well a motherboard doesn't suck up that much power when only a hard drive is plugged in. Its a 500 Watt btw. So any ideas? I dont' want to say its the motherboard because his old one died and this is the replacement....but i can't think of anything else....mebe the monitor plug? |

i'm guessing it has on-board video since you didn't mention a video card. also, what do you mean by "the monitor doesn't work"? it doesn't power on? it never leaves standby? leaves standby but only error message? does the system beep when you power on? how many times, if any? short beeps? long beeps? what was he doing when it stopped working? try another monitor with the same system? who replaced the mobo? what processor? try putting in an actual video card and see if that works. if you get no beeps, it's either PSU, mobo, proc. ^_^ wowza fast reply... anyways Yeah its running on board since i tried to keep it down to the bare minimums. Its not a hardware problem as in someone stuck a foot through the monitor, its just that nothing appears on the monitor. The yellow powersave light stays there and it just doesn't show anything. With the old mobo it would beep when starting up, a couple short beeps 2-3 and then just shut the computer off without showing anything up. Now with the new replacement it doesn't beep at all and keeps everything running...fans, hard drives, etc. but same problem, still nothing displaying on the monitor. I personally replaced the new mobo into the computer so i know i couldn't have fried it accidently with static. I plugged in a spare 9200 i have and same thing comes up....just a blank screen. I hope its not the processor since this things a pinless pentium 4 and i don't have any spares around the house to replace it with. I'll try swapping the PSU but i've never heard of a PSU selectivley providing power to certain parts of a compy when its not set to do it. |

it could also be RAM. generally (depending on your BIOS), 2 beeps means video problem, 3 or more means RAM or mobo/proc. if you put in a new vid card and NO beeps, i would say probably RAM or mobo. if his old mobo fried, there is a possibility that it f'd up other pieces, even the proc ![]() unfortunately, RAM and proc's are difficult to test because of compatibility issues. how many sticks of RAM are there? if there are 2, try one at a time (in the '1' or 'A' slot). |

Doesn't this sound very familiar Jigg? I had the same exact issue when Jigg built my box for me while showing me how to do it. Turned out that 2 or 3 of the motherboards that I had and replaced over and over again had faulty RAM slots. I tried 2 or 3 ASUS motherboards and then finally got pissed and went to an ABIT which instantly worked. Jigg ended up having to go to the beep test to figure out what it was but it ended up being the RAM slots on the motherboard. Come to think of it, the ABIT one I have also had a faulty RAM slot but it's a gaming board and allowed for a funky RAM configuration which allowed me to have the RAM in different slots and still work correctly. I believe this was my 3rd or 4th board I tried and decided not to replace it anymore and just use the two working RAM slots there. But Jigg was the man who helped me figure it out so he is one of the best to help you out in my opinion. ![]() |
