Knight said something in one of his threads that got me thinking...we are all a lot older than we were during the great days of FT. What does everyone do for a living now? I graduated college a couple months ago and I currently do IT work for a government contracted business. I also have a part-time job doing more IT work for a teleservices company. Just finally got my CompTIA A+ certification so I am an "official" computer tech. A+ doesn't mean a whole lot but I plan to get my MCITP next and then move on to some VMware type training. What about all you honkies? |

I'm a Geek Squad repair technician. I'm going back to school this fall to finish off my bachelors, so it's not for much longer. I'm looking to get into the corporate IT world. You think a A+ cert would increase my chances of getting hired (enough so that it's worth the $150 or whatever they charge to take it)? How about security clearance? You think I should try to go for that before I apply for a job, or whoever hires me would be willing enough to do it? | ||

Someone created a similar thread earlier (maybe you), but I think that was several months ago. Anyway... I've been a Unix/Linux sysadmin for over 10 years. To paraphrase what I said in that other thread months ago: being an admin at a company that doesn't have system engineers means they pay you less and you get more bitch work. It kinda sucks but the original company/ies I worked for got acquired twice in the last few years, so my title and pay will hopefully catch up with the times. The current corporate overlords decreed that I get RHCSA certified, which I now am. It's great and all ($2000 some bucks that I didn't have to pay) but I hate Red Hat. I'm a Debian guy... ALWAYS!  Sadly, IT auditors tend to frown on anything other than RH.So yeah, sysadmin'ing is fun, and I could definitely do it for the rest of my working years... except when I'm on-call every ten weeks. That shit fucking sucks. EDIT: Just to clarify for you nerds out there, when I say "IT auditors tend to frown on anything other than RH" I'm talking about distributions of GNU/Linux. Auditors love shitty dinosaur platforms like AIX and HPUX (and Solaris too, because it's dead to me after Oracle bought Sun) Edited Fri Jun 29 2012, 02:47AM |

I would say it's a good place to start as far as certifications go. It's pretty general computer knowledge so I'm sure it would be pretty easy for you to pass. The downside is I paid $180 for each test, there are two. The company I work for requires it so it was a must for me, even though I was already planning on taking it. Security clearance I can't tell you much about, I honestly applied for this job not knowing that you could get it ahead of time. The paperwork is a HUGE pain in the ass but if you are planning/hoping to get into some form of company working for the government then I think generally they are alright with you not having it when you apply (from what I know, one of my good friends also works for the DoD and he didn't have it before they hired him either). TL:DR I recommend the A+ certification, it's a little pricey but it shows you have some initiative if you have it beforehand which is always a good thing. Alex, I do remember I believe Japa posting something about computer related jobs a while back. I was just curious with all of these old but new faces around again what everyone had been up to. One of my other best friends is actually a computer security auditor and from what I hear they are pretty strict on their guidelines, although I'm sure they have to be. Still, I feel your pain with having to be on the other end of situations like that.  Rusty, I noticed you have been posting lots of beer related stuff on THE BOOK. You should toss me some suggestions of good beers to try, preferably ones that I can actually get my hands on in the midwest lol. |

I just got a job at City Hall in Prince George, BC, Canada as an IT Technician. It is quite simple, solving everyday problems that normal users have. I graduated from college in may, with the following: A+ certification & Testout a+ equivalent CCNA(Cisco Certified Network Associate) Microsoft certifications at IT professional levels in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 FoA certification (Fiber optics for canada) ETA (Electronics Technician Associate Customer Support Specialist (CSS) Certification) Suse linux server, learned some administration but ran out of class time |

Looks like everyone here so far is all IT. I graduated with my AD in IT Network Administration, currently work right under a network admin (he is my only boss and co-worker and I am forever grateful for that.) My job pretty much handles network administrative duties, so my next step after this job is to be a network administrator. Currently, I have no other certifications other than my associates, but I would like to at least get N+ and A+ because they're the easiest. The company I work for is a small business that deals with water treatment. They are somewhere in between the 30-40 million dollar gross area and rapidly expanding, so I am thankful to be a part of that. In the next five years, I am hoping that the company expands enough that I have a larger role within, but if not, I will seek my network administration job somewhere else. You have to move up eventually. |

I'm still at MIT. Ran into some tough times as a lot of you probably remember. About another year to go, and I'll be a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. I've been working at our IT dept. being awesome for the past 4 years. However, I've recently decided that I'm most likely going to teach High School Physics upon graduating. Should be student teaching this year, once they find a spot for me. Pretty exciting change of plans for me, tbh. |

Got one more year of Pre-Pharmacy and then hopefully pharmacy school after that. I got my first job a couple months ago working at a pharmacy so that's exciting | ||
