Super down for a rerun. I think we all have some old connections to plan something ahead of time, on an updated game, or even outdated, for all of us to do an event on. I would look forward to that very much

I actually posted this article yesterday, but due to a glitch in the website I don't think it made it in the forum. If for some reason I have double posted this by accident, would a site admin please delete this thread. Games From “The Day†Ah yes, the games of our childhood. Back when graphics were considered to be five star if the main character just remotely looked like a human figure. Many of the games simply just had you collect as many points as possible for an objective. Of course none of this would hold up in today’s standards, but there’s a certain something about an old school game that just makes it so much more fun. I still play my SNES to this day, and my Super Mario All Stars cartridge gets plenty of usage. Even with all the hype about graphics and online gaming, I honestly would be satisfied if Nintendo would just release an ultimate Super Mario Bros with never-ending levels (they recently released a super Mario bros game for the DS (which I don’t have), but I can’t help but think it looks like a remake that they just slapped some graphics and a few new features on). It doesn’t have to be 2D throughout the whole game, they could put in levels Mario64 style (no squirt guns, or vacuum gimmicks please), or even have a few “borrowed†levels from Mario Kart or Smash Bros. And with all these systems coming out with online capabilities, new levels could be downloaded every day. Now that would truly be the ultimate game. Now that you know what I like in a game, let’s take a look at some of the games from back in the day. Super Mario Bros OK, If you don’t know that name, you deserve to be buried up to your neck in the desert, where temperatures can reach up to 120 degrees, and fire ants will crawl over you head each day, stinging you inside your nose, ears, and eyelids; while birds pluck out your hair to make their nests and snakes slither around your exposed head. Where the mid-day sun dries out your eyeballs until they shrivel, and you beg for your death from dehydration to come three days of agonizing torture later. So let’s hope you know who this loveable plumber is. What is there not to love about this game? You’re a short plumber, who has to save the princess by eating mushrooms, stomping on turtles, and throwing dinosaurs into lava. Whoa whoa whoa, I eat mushrooms to get bigger you say? Sounds like someone might have had a few mushrooms themselves to make this game? Not true at all. As it turns out, Japanese people like to eat (lsd free) mushrooms! They put them in all sorts of crazy dishes, like soup, stir fry, and even pizza! The Japanese encourage you to eat your mushrooms; it’s the equivalent to Popeye and his spinach. Not many people know this, but the creator of Mario actually wanted to use Popeye as the main character, not a plumber. But a copyright issue put a stop to that, and thus, the Popeye sprite was converted to jump-man (the character from the original Donkey Kong). And this is why Mario gets bigger when he eats a mushroom; not Popeye juicing up on spinach steroids (seriously, I’m not making this up. I couldn’t come up with crazy shit like this if I tried). Super Mario Bros is more addictive than crack, and has blossomed into an entire series over the years. Let’s see if I can remember the whole list *ahem* Donkey Kong, Mario Bros. (arcade battle game), Super Mario Bros (/Duck Hunt), Super Mario Bros: the lost levels (Japan only), Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario Bros: Yoshi’s Island, Mario Paint, Super Mario Bros: The Six Coins (Gameboy), Mario Kart, The one with baby Mario and Yoshi (can’t remember the name), Super Mario RPG, Mario is Missing (Luigi’s game), Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Super Smash Bros., Paper Mario, Mario Golf-Tennis, Mario Party 1-2-3-(4-5-6-7-8 Game Cube), Luigi’s Mansion, Super Smash Bros (GC), Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart: Double Dash, Mario Baseball-Soccer, and all the crazy remakes they did for Gameboy Advance and DS. And that’s all from memory bitches, so don’t say “Oh but you missed Super Mario Bros: Anal Rape Simulator.†I could go on for hours discussing the ingeniousness of every one of those games (with the exception of Mario is Missing and Super Mario RPG, cause I never really played them), but I won’t because I have to fit some other old school games in here. Sonic Sega was always ahead of the curve. Unfortunately this may also be the reason for their undoing. After the Dreamcast came out, they fell into a rut and were unable to advance ahead of their competing systems. However one character has survived the holocaust of failed Sega titles. Sonic. Mario had his jumping, but Sonic had the speed. Sonic was a change from all the slow paced games that seemed to be so plentiful in the days of the Nintendo. And the idea of using rings for health, what a breakthrough. Now when you got hurt, you had a chance regain your health, to ensure you lived to the end of the level. Sonic also reinvented the bonus round. Now, if you collected 50 rings, you would be rewarded at the end of every level for a chance to get a Chaos emerald, and ultimately power up to become Super-Sonic; who was invincible and super fast. Sonic also introduced one of the first 2 player modes in Sonic 2, which could be picked up by a friend mid game without having to restart at the beginning world. Who needed online gaming when you had an orange fox following you around, who would constantly die, and then magically fly down from the heavens, resurrected and ready to follow you until his inevitable death again. Now, Sonic is all but ruined in his 3D games. They lack the ability to speed through a level, and the choice of taking multiple paths from point A to point B. The new games even went so far as to add the dreaded “collect things†mission. I miss the days of loop-de-loops, floating platforms, and bosses that always took 8 hits to defeat. Solar Jet Man Now I know a lot of you out there are scratching your head trying to remember this one. This badly translated game came to the NES in the early days of gaming, and was one of the first to combine realistic gravity effects with a shooting game. You were in a ship (in the shape of a blue tear drop) and had to collect parts of an ancient artifact, and then bring them back to your mother-ship. Here’s the catch, the pieces of the artifact are scattered throughout the galaxy on planets with extremes in gravity. Somehow the parts were always in an underground cave that you had to navigate while avoiding enemies and gravity mines that would suck you in. Along the way, you could pick up power-ups for your ship (which had to be brought back to the mother-ship to be installed) such as shields or booster rockets. Also, you would have to watch your fuel gauge, otherwise your ship would explode, and you would be left in your space suit, with only your weak ray gun to defend you (although slightly more maneuverable I must admit). This was by no means an easy game. The second level alone takes forever to finish, no matter how good you are. I spent countless hours trying to beat this game, but sadly, I have yet to pass the third level to this day. I have been searching for a copy so I could play this Lunar Lander spin-off again, but it is a rare game now. Excite Bike Man, what a game this was. You race against up to four other people (not a multiplayer game, but 4 AI) on a dirt bike track (which oddly enough, never seemed to be the color of dirt), going over anything from the size of a speed bump, to a mountain of floating dirt. Somehow you’d manage to complete a lap on a “circular†track, although you never made a single turn. And then the overheating would begin. Every time, if you managed to get the lead, your tiny engine would be so hot, you’d have to pull over and sit on the side of the track to keep from blowing up. Also, if you did manage to fall, you’d tumble head over handlebars, and hang on, hoping you’d land on your wheels again and roll away unharmed. This was an instant classic, and one of the few 3rd person racers. Mike Tyson’s Punch Out Who didn’t spend hundreds of dollars in quarters at the arcade for this game? Only hoping to one day meet Mike Tyson, only to be defeated by the fat guy, who couldn’t keep his pants up. Did anyone see that ref… omg! It’s Mario! Mario is reffing this fight! Surely he’ll make good calls, and keep this a fair fight. Nope. I always wanted to punch Mario when he came out to call the fight, but the primitive Nintendo controls would never let me. Oh yeah, and that first fighter, you know, the guy who always had the rose in his teeth well… he’s gay. Scorched Earth I loved this early PC game. It took all the power of DOS to run this little gem. You and up to four other buddies were tanks, set in a mountainous landscape, trying to blast the crap out of each other. Your armory consisted of tons of weapons such as nukes, rolling bombs, MIRV’s, earth removers, and death’s head for your WMD. After everyone frantically chose their arsenal, the match would start. Shells rained down from the heavens, as you squeaked and beeped your way through the 8 bit explosions. It was a game of aim, and technique. Of course, when one person started winning, they got to buy all the weapons and utterly destroy the competition. This usually led to a fight or someone breaking their keyboard. Now, because it is so outdated, no system can run Scorched Earth. Instead I go to addictinggames.com and play Tank Battle, which has almost every feature Scorched Earth had. I press the shift button 5 times in a row while I play to get the authentic Scorched Earth sounds. The only problem with Tank Battle is that it’s way too easy. CS 1.6 Pfffffft, who the hell remembers that game. Quake It may not have been the first FPS, but it was the first one I ever played. Quake was one of the first games to use the internet for multiplayer games. Of course, if your computer wasn’t directly connected to the same server as your opponent, you would lag to death indefinitely. Whenever I had to go in to work with my Dad at Teradyne (bring your son to work day or something like that), I would get challenged to a match of quake. My favorite level to play on was the outdoors arena; I can’t remember the names of any of the levels. Just being able to shoot my rocket launcher at the guy with the nail gun 3 cubicles away made my day. I knew everyone’s hiding spot on that map. Many of the fy maps I make today share a resemblance to the early quake levels. Rush 2 Anyone remember the Rush series? The racing game where you always got ridiculous air off of every jump? That was one of my favorite games. My friends and I would always play tag on the stunt park levels, or just cruise around race tracks looking for the hidden keys and mountain dew cans so we could unlock the secret cars. I knew every cheat for that game by heart (and trust me, there were a ton of cheats). They recently came out with a Rush for the PS2, but they took the whole arcade feel out of the game and made it into a GTA/Need for Speed rip off. Raiden (lets hope I spelled that right) Who hasn’t dumped quarters into this game at the arcade? You’re this little plane on this big screen filled with plenty of enemies to shoot. Power-ups are plentiful and pleasing to look at as you single-handedly (or with a second player) leave a path of destruction behind you. By the time you’re on the third level, the enemies cower as your energy beam (or bullets) consumes the entire screen, leaving no survivors. And then comes the bosses… they think they can stand a chance against you? No. Unleashing bomb after bomb while engaging in a volley of hell fire, they hit the eject button and run from your once little airplane. Man what a game. Those are a few games I used to play back in the day. If you’re wondering why I left out some classic games like Mortal Kombat or Resident Evil, It’s because I never really played those games. Write your own review of the games you used to play back in the day, or what you’d like to see applied to today’s games that seem to have been lost over the years. |

SUPER MARIO BROTHERS!!!! That is my ultimate favorite game of all time. I own every single one (and the consoles they need to run it) and the best one is definately the first. Theres nothing like jumping up to hit blocks before time runs out. And then the inevitable getting owned by a fire breathing turtle. Great times. |
