It's always bad... like all they show is bad news. What? There's no good, happy news to report? Man died, man died, woman died, children died, soldiers died, rebels died, rebels killed man women children and soldiers today, the economy is fucked, your next president is going to be a douchebag, it's cold and windy, all other countries are better than you, your sports are fucked up, the feds spend more time investigating the fucked upness of sports than they do on the economy, cut back to the economy being fucked and you being poor and possibly dying. There, I recapped the news in a paragraph. No need to watch now. 100% right. News is always about death and hell. It's not a quest for ratings. What do you think more people are worried about? "Hey! Someone just got robbed a half mile from my front door" or "Senior citizen knits quilt for homeless man"? Dude, local news helps a lot. My high school and college are in bad neighborhoods. Every time something happens around us (Most recently serial arson followed by dead body found on campus), I hear about it on the local news. In High School, one of my classmates got shot and killed a block from my school. Where did I hear about that? The next morning over the announcements after I walked a mile alone through a bad neighborhood to get to class? No. Local news. Edited Thu Feb 21 2008, 04:42PM |

To no one in particular: I wasn't arguing that local news serves no purpose. Exposing local events, happenings, and the whathaveyou is important to some people. Maybe someone blowing him/herself up with a CW relic really makes ripples in the pond. Perhaps I don't give a fuck. Journalism is not beholden to each individual that may or may not take notice, but I also feel that seeing the equivalent of: "Hey y'all, someone done blewed hisself up wull polishin' some blackpowda bawlz from the time of the War Of Northern Aggression! Tune in fer details!" ...doesn't qualify as "breaking news" to me. But hey, I signed up for the weather alerts because, let's face it, that's the only true goodness of local news! |
