Super down for a rerun. I think we all have some old connections to plan something ahead of time, on an updated game, or even outdated, for all of us to do an event on. I would look forward to that very much

Well I've just gotten into DVDs and shit like that, so I've been ripping them to the computer, and found that they're 5 GB apiece. I need a nice external to hold them all, and my mom is paying for them, so price is no object. I don't know the trusted brands, and stuff like that, so if someone could find me the best 500 GB (preferred) or TB external, I'd <3 you forever. Max price for 500 GB would be about $300 (about $250 preferred) and TB $500-$600. (but like i said, price is no object... if you find a kick ass one, let me know) Thanks for your help guys. P.S. I only have FireWire 400 ports, not 800, and i believe that USB 2.0 is faster than the FireWire 400 ports, so USB is the preferred (interface?) (unless I'm wrong and FireWire 400 ports are faster than USB 2.0's) Edited Sun Mar 11 2007, 05:44PM |

nostie i bought a new internal 500 gig hard drive (western digital) and partitioned it into two 250 gig ones. It was like 200 bucks. I have all my movies, music, and tv shows on one of the 250 gig partitions, and theres plenty of room. The other partition i boot off of, and my old hard drive is backup (150 gig of backup isnt that bad) i suggest you do that. no wires. |

i agree with amped and emerican, go internal. you must be ripping some old movies or losing some quality because most full-length DVDs are dual-layer ~8.5 Gb

Well jigg i gave him some sick ass software that lets u rip only one layer of a dual layer movie...if it has widescreen and full screen you can just rip both of them, also this sofware lets u JUST get the movie, no menu, extra shit or nothing, unless u want it of course..........

Western digital, and Sandisk are the the best brands. Go for one of those if possible. Externals tend to be less stable sometimes at higher storage rates, so yeah, go internal.

wow i'm surprised nobody mentioned the use of external cases yet o_O' Eh, what i mean is (i'm sure you already know), go buy an internal 500 regardless of IDE or SATA setup, and snag an external case for it. The cases range from like 30-40 bucks depending on what they offer, like fans or whether its just a big piece of heat absorbing aluminum. I've found internals to be a little more sturdy and stable than the externals. @ kddude Sandisk? i've never tried a sandisk hard drive....give Seagate a shot too though! |

Well external are nice in case ya wanna just bring it someplace and watch a flick or share your movies with others. Western Digital My Book have pretty7 good revies. Ive been usin WD for years and never had a problem. DVD Shrink may help with the size of the files too. Maxtor One touch are good too. I would get the largest drive possible within your budget. 500 is not all that big these days. The back-up software for many external drives is Dantz Retrospect which is pretty good once ya get the sofware set up. You could just have it mirror the folder you rip your DVD to and have it do it while you are sleeping or at work. Also you can look at external SATA enclosures if your motherboard supports it. Mine has both firewire and USB 2 ports so I use the firewire and keep my USB2 available for other things.
